Climate & Ecosystems
Help others to be cautiously optimistic
As practitioners whose work relates to climate and sustainability, we often find ourselves in conversation with people who sense the existential threats to humankind. We can help people by simultaneously directing them toward actions and helping them see that we as a species still have a chance to course-correct.
Climate & Ecosystems

Health & Equity
Learn About Gender Diversity
SDG #5 Gender
I will spend 30 minutes learning about gender diversity.
Education & Livelihood
Engage In Active Listening
SDG #17 Partnerships
I will practice actively listening to a friend, family member, co-worker, peer, or someone who has a different experience/identity for 2 conversations per day.
Education & Livelihood
Work-Life Balance
SDG #8 Work & Economy
During the workday, I will schedule time for daily rest during work days to practice work-life balance.

Joshua Skov 4/29/2022 9:36 AMThis month has felt extra busy. Although I have many 'actions' on 'autopilot', i.e., they are deliberate parts of my lifestyle, I have had little room and time to explore new things. It has emphasized to me how important it is to have things baked into one's day-to-day life. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & Ecosystems Calculate Your Carbon ImpactWhat is one way you will reduce your carbon foorprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?
Joshua Skov 4/25/2022 10:33 AMWe have an EV on order. We already do many things as a household, and have even made some big investments recently (like a heat pump to replace natural gas heating). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & Ecosystems Reduce Single-Use PlasticsWhat plastic or single-use items do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted?
Joshua Skov 4/25/2022 10:32 AMI was on the road to see a relative, and I realized I could make different dietary choices along the way to minimize waste (as well as the impact associated with my dietary choices!). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & Livelihood Engage In Active ListeningWhat was it like to actively listen to someone? How did both people and the conversation benefit from active listening?
Joshua Skov 4/25/2022 10:30 AMI spent some time with a relative with cancer, and although she and I have many differing social and political views, I came prepared to listen to her talk about her situation and her perspectives on the world. It left me much more at peace than I have been in many other interactions, and she clearly felt grateful and more connected to me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & Livelihood Work-Life BalanceHow does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Joshua Skov 4/25/2022 10:29 AMIf I can be more present by taking breaks, within days and for longer stretches, I can be less on autopilot and make better and more deliberate decisions about diet and other consumption. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & Livelihood Volunteer In My CommunityWhat is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?
Joshua Skov 4/11/2022 4:50 PMI've realized that even when I'm not formally volunteering in the organizations for which I have volunteered in the past, it's important for me to stay connected to people still doing that community work because I have something to give (even with less time to give it) and it keeps me connected to my community. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & Ecosystems Know Your Sustainable Seafood OptionsWhat was the tastiest sustainable seafood meal you ever had or had recently? Did you make it? Can you share a recipe?
Joshua Skov 4/11/2022 4:48 PMI think one of the weirdest but most meaningful ways I can fulfill this particular action is by abstaining from unsustainable seafood in a situation in which I would otherwise have consumed it, e.g., saying no to bluefin tuna when having sushi with my family.
