Climate & Ecosystems
The Great Turning Film & Panel Discussion
SDG #13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. I attended this event on 4/13, and it was a very moving experience. The film was a powerful reminder that the earth is a living being, a "body" from which we take so many resources, and it is important that we give back by showing respect and restraint: we are the "cells" of the "body" of earth, after all, and we need to stop acting like we are the rulers of her. There was rich discussion about the different ways action can be taken to combat climate change, and it was inspiring to be told that the grief we feel for our earth's suffering can be one of the most powerful catalysts for creativity and courage.
Climate & Ecosystems
Join A Climate Action Orginization
SDG #13 Climate
I will learn about local, national and international climate action organizations that I could join and connect with one or more.
Climate & Ecosystems

Understand Your Climate And Natural Disaster Risks
SDG #9 Industry & Infrastructure
I will spend 15 minutes learning about the climate and natural disaster risks in my area.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG #3 Health & Well-Being
I will replace 30 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Basic Needs & Security
Reduce Animal Product Consumption
SDG #2 Zero Hunger
I will enjoy 1 meatless meal(s) and/or 1 vegan meal(s) each day this week.
Basic Needs & Security
Know Your Produce
SDG #2 Zero Hunger
I will visit ewg.org to learn about and use their Clean 15 and Dirty Dozen produce lists.
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG #6 Water & Sanitation
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.

Krista Rivera 4/30/2022 6:58 AMGlimpse of Gratitude: Today I woke up to watch the sunrise on the beach. It was a cloudy day, but it was still magical to see the rays of sunlight emerging from behind the wall of gray, and even more special that there was no one else around. To top it off, I saw an enormous coyote running into the forest, its coat the color of the shore. Rising early is a gift. -
Krista Rivera 4/30/2022 6:48 AMGlimpse of Gratitude 4/29: Thank you to the beach waves that were adorning the sandy shore with white eyelet patterns of foam as I walked into the sun. It was so good to say hello to the Atlantic, and to see her dancing wildly in such a lovely gown… -
Krista Rivera 4/30/2022 6:40 AMGlimpse of Gratitude 4/28: Thank you to the two ospreys (which I learned is called a duet!) who soared above my car while on a long road trip. The beginning of their name sounds a lot like “awe” for a reason . . . -
Krista Rivera 4/27/2022 7:50 PMGlimpse of Gratitude: Thank you to the great group of ladies (including Tara Booth, who is taking the photo!) who picked up litter on this super windy day! I swear, that was the earth blowing us kisses . . . -
Krista Rivera 4/26/2022 4:16 PMSomeone gifted me these tiny pinecones that they found while on a hike since they look like little flowers - one of the best bouquets I've ever received. My Glimpse of Gratitude goes to this symbol of a shared appreciation for the little things that nature offers us, the things that, when we notice them, remind us of the big things. Mary Oliver, a favorite poet of mine who lived a life in close communion with nature, wrote, "Attention is the beginning of devotion." If we are to be dedicated to the natural world, we first need to be awake in its presence. Let our eyes always be open. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & Ecosystems Join A Climate Action OrginizationWhat area of climate action are you most passionate about and why?
Krista Rivera 4/25/2022 6:58 PMI gravitated towards organizations whose mission is to plant and protect trees. The Rainforest Foundation US (https://rainforestfoundation.org/engage/treehouse/) really caught my attention, as it also addresses the rights of indigenous peoples, which I have been more interested in learning about. One Tree Planted (https://onetreeplanted.org/) also seems to have an incredible team working hard to bring back the green. Reading all of their bios made me want to join! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & Security Calculate Your Water FootprintWhat is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?
Krista Rivera 4/25/2022 5:26 PMI'm trying to get better about turning off the kitchen faucet when scrubbing dishes. I'm also trying to cut down on my meat consumption and starting to toss leftover water into my watering cans for my houseplants. I think when I own my own house, it will be nice to have more say in the types of appliances and water fixtures I use. -
Krista Rivera 4/25/2022 5:04 PMGlimpse of Gratitude (today): I planted serviceberry trees (AKA shadbush) with the Outdoor Education program today, and I'm grateful for the feeling of cool, wet soil on my bare hands - it had been too long since I last got dirt under my nails. Some muddier parts of the earth had the texture of clay, and a student and I were molding it in our hands, imagining baking the earth into pottery under the spring sun. What a gift today was . . .
Here's a picture of what (I think) the tiny, twig-like trees we planted will turn into over time. I can't wait to watch them grow! -
Krista Rivera 4/25/2022 4:54 PMGlimpse of Gratitude (4/24): I was talking to a friend yesterday, and we were talking about the chains of time (I unplugged all of the clocks in my house recently because I became so sick of seeing the time everywhere I looked, and despised the anxiety it provokes!), how it used to be the sun that told us when to rise in the morning, and so forth. We also discussed how conditioned we are to be in tune with the past and the present; meanwhile, the only thing that truly exists is the NOW, the one thing we so rarely experience fully. This transitioned into a conversation about how nature IS the embodiment of presence, FULL presence, and it teaches me how to be HERE and nowhere else. My friend later shared this thought-provoking quotation with me, which I'd like to share now with all of you: "Try to imagine a life without timekeeping. You probably can’t. You know the month, the year, the day of the week. There is a clock on your wall or the dashboard of your car. You have a schedule, a calendar, a time for dinner or a movie. Yet all around you, timekeeping is ignored. Birds are not late. A dog does not check its watch. Deer do not fret over passing birthdays. Man alone measures time. Man alone chimes the hour. And, because of this, man alone suffers a paralyzing fear that no other creature endures. A fear of time running out.” ~Mitch Albom, The Time Keeper

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Equity Spend Time OutsideWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Krista Rivera 4/23/2022 2:22 PMThe amount of time we spend indoors and on screens saddens and disturbs me deeply. Being indoors and on screens moves our attention inward, and we forget to look up and around. We begin to miss the little treasures life offers. Tension builds in our bodies. We respond too quickly to the dings of emails and texts. We scroll through life rather than walk it, touch it, breathe it. We lose sleep. And we forget what it's like to have dirt on the soles of our feet. Our compartmentalized and digitized lives lose their wild beauty. Time spent in this manner fuels disconnection from nature, which can then breed a diminished appreciation and respect for nature, and if people don't value nature, don't recognize it as an extension of themselves, then they will not be driven to protect it.
