Climate & Ecosystems
Support Local Pollinators
SDG #15 Life On Land
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 10 minutes researching which plants support local pollinators and plant some in my area.
Basic Needs & Security
Tour of Open Door Mission- shelter/food pantry
With a fellow EcoChallenge teammate, I toured the Open Door Mission to view their facilities, gain an understanding of the scope of their work to serve homeless and low income people in our community, and learn how they are incorporating sustainable efforts into their operations.
Climate & Ecosystems
LLAMA FARM TOUR
Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss The team will visit the llama farm to learn about the animals and their lives, and discuss the llama's role within an ecosystem - pets, guard animal, fiber use, and manure

I will spend 20 minutes learning about how and where to dispose of medications and chemicals properly.
Basic Needs & Security
Take 5-Minute Or Less Showers
SDG #6 Water & Sanitation

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & Ecosystems Learn About Invasive SpeciesWhat is one invasive species in your region and how does it impact your region's ecosystem?
Sarah LeRoux 4/28/2022 11:39 AMI was surprised to learn that domestic outdoor cats are considered invasive species. Collectively all over the world they kills billions of birds annually. -
Sarah LeRoux 4/27/2022 12:03 PMFresh salad greens from the College Farm! How lucky are we to have such a resource on campus!?-
Emily Kane 4/29/2022 12:27 PMIt's the best!

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & Ecosystems Support Local PollinatorsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators? Do you have a favorite pollinator?
Sarah LeRoux 4/27/2022 9:44 AMThey help the reproduction of flowering plants and human food crops. I like birds best. It's fun to spot them and watch them work. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Equity Spend Time OutsideWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Sarah LeRoux 4/26/2022 10:48 AMDepression, low energy, perhaps poor eating habits, less exercise, less peer interaction, less learning and growth...there are numerous implications once you really start to consider them. For me it means less time to be creative. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Equity Practice MindfulnessWhat was it like to practice mindfulness? If this is a practice for you already, what was something new you understood in practicing during Earth Month?
Sarah LeRoux 4/26/2022 10:46 AMThis is not something I practiced before. I haven't done it enough even now for it to be a habit or be easy to accomplish distraction free. It takes time, but I'm more mindful of being mindful :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Equity Safe Disposal of Medications and Household ChemicalsDo you have any tips for others on finding locations that accept products for safe disposal?
Sarah LeRoux 4/25/2022 9:08 AMCheck the FDA flush/don't flush list first. If you need a drop off location, check with your pharmacy first. I found a local hospital has a drop location. -
Sarah LeRoux 4/24/2022 7:06 PMYay! Spring has finally sprung. There is beauty all around us. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & Communities Mend ClothingWhat was it like to mend your clothing? If you are skilled at mending, what tips do you have for others?
Sarah LeRoux 4/22/2022 9:44 AMI am not skilled at sewing so I paid to have the work done. I'm happy the life of the item is extended. The quick fix was easy and rewarding. I try to have items that I donate in top shape for the next person too. That way someone sorting clothing in a donation center doesn't see a hole or tear and throw it away instead of passing it on. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & Security Calculate Your Water FootprintWhat is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?
Sarah LeRoux 4/22/2022 7:54 AMI don't wash my car regularly, but when I do, I will aim to use self service as it uses much less water than a drive through car wash.
I do several things to reduce my indoor water use including using energy efficient appliances. -
Sarah LeRoux 4/22/2022 7:02 AMHappy Earth Day! Did you see today's Google Doodle? Interesting and powerful images.
