Once again, I really enjoyed the ecochallenge! Last year I learned a lot and was able to keep up most of the habits I practiced. I loved this year's focuses and the balance between the learning front and the day-to-day action front. I think the habits that the ecochallenge has prompted me to begin will stick around!

Economy & Communities Online Energy Audit
What most interested or surprised you about your energy audit?

Since we're renting, we can't really implement some of the tips ourselves, but there are things we can bring up to the landlord. We've definitely made some adjustments to reduce our energy consumption - esp. since the price of natural gas skyrocketed this winter (so heating the house) and prepping for the heat that will come this summer (hello rolling blackouts). Luckily this house was designed with good window placement to take advantage of natural light
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate & Ecosystems Calculate Your Carbon Impact
What is one way you will reduce your carbon foorprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?

    Laura DeSimio 4/26/2022 7:42 AM
I think I do pretty well here - but there's always the hidden things aren't there?

What surprised you about the two produce lists? How will you use these lists for your grocery shopping? Have you used these lists before?

Living in a heavy agricultural zone this helps me understand the ecosystem a little more clearly since it's not something I've ever really thought about before
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Basic Needs & Security Learn About the Basic Needs & Security SDGs
What was a linking factor across this group of SDGs?

    Laura DeSimio's avatar
    Laura DeSimio 4/26/2022 7:39 AM
I thought this was a good framework for all of the other areas - I kinda wish I had started here. But in any event, I liked the reminder that these issues are global, since a lot of the actions are hyper-local.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate & Ecosystems Learn About Invasive Species
What is one invasive species in your region and how does it impact your region's ecosystem?

    Laura DeSimio's avatar
    Laura DeSimio 4/25/2022 7:55 AM
I didn't like reading about this since it seems like the examples weren't necessarily intentional. I was in DC when stink bugs were the new invasive species, then it was snakeheads, then it was the lantern moths (last year) - makes you wonder what's next...
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Climate & Ecosystems Support Local Pollinators
Why is it important to take care of pollinators? Do you have a favorite pollinator?

    Laura DeSimio's avatar
    Laura DeSimio 4/25/2022 7:52 AM
I loved learning about this - it helped me see the thought behind the garden at my house  (I had always thought that it was more of a folly and a water-waster, but now I can see that the variety is helpful to bees (we have a ton!)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health & Equity Practice Mindfulness
What was it like to practice mindfulness? If this is a practice for you already, what was something new you understood in practicing during Earth Month?

    Laura DeSimio's avatar
    Laura DeSimio 4/25/2022 7:47 AM
I combine my mindfulness goal with my spending time outside goal - I find that they really go hand-in-hand with each other.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Health & Equity Safe Disposal of Medications and Household Chemicals
Do you have any tips for others on finding locations that accept products for safe disposal?

    Laura DeSimio's avatar
    Laura DeSimio 4/25/2022 7:45 AM
I realize how lucky I am because my city makes it really easy to dispose of hazardous household waste - you just have to go to the dump and they can help you with everything you have!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Economy & Communities Mend Clothing
What was it like to mend your clothing? If you are skilled at mending, what tips do you have for others?

    Laura DeSimio's avatar
    Laura DeSimio 4/25/2022 7:43 AM
I think that was one of my favorite "challenges" - I have always mended clothes and stretched out their use as long as I can. My tip for others: If there is a rip at a seam, it is really easy to repair. If their is a tear not at a seam, it is likely due to fit or use issues, so you can repair it, but know that it is a short-term fix.
