What a beautiful month this has been. Not only have we had a great opportunity to focus on the welfare of our planet but it is the beginning of gardening season! I've loved starting my vegetables from seed, prepping the greenhouse and the garden, enjoying the return of the birds to our cool Canadian climate and watching the sunsets from the front porch. I look forward to leaning into spring, playing in the dirt, and walking barefoot in the grass. I take with me the deeper lessons I've learned this month and pledge to continue my journey to contributing to a healthier planet.
Thank you Shift Network for offering this opportunity and many blessings to everyone who took part.

Hi Mary-Ann your spring garden sounds delightful. I've also enjoyed the many learnings from being part of this team and eco-challenge. From you I heard about Tree Sisters and spent some time exploring what they're all about, thank you for sharing. Love and blessings to you.

I'm grateful to spend more time reflecting on how my daily actions impact the planet. This month I was happy to discover what I already do to behave in a more sustainable way but also to notice where the gaps are and to spend time learning about these in order to incorporate new habits. Thank you for all the resource materials!!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate & Ecosystems
What was the tastiest sustainable seafood meal you ever had or had recently? Did you make it? Can you share a recipe?

    Mary-Ann Zauhar-Hiscock's avatar

I've been vegan for 13 years but since this is a team goal, I recently read about the huge disruption to the ocean floor caused by dragging for fish and explored some of the new plant based seafood options.  I could share a crab cake recipe made with hearts of palm?? Thanks for reminding me of the importance of sustainable seafood!!

That sounds delicious! I'd love to know how you make those. A vegan diet is such a great choice for the planet.

What was one of your most memorable volunteer experiences, and why? What would you like to volunteer for next, and why?

I have volunteered on several occasions in a local soup kitchen - The Mustard Seed - where meals are prepared and served to the city's homeless population. It struck me that although homeless, every person was so grateful and joyful as they came up to get their plate. It helped me be so much more appreciative of all that I have - Each time, I left full of gratitude for what the city's vulnerable population had taught me. Find the joy...

    Mary-Ann Zauhar-Hiscock's avatar

Without these pollinators we wouldn't have any food!! We try to attract pollinators by planting flowers they love. It sustains the pollinators and beautifies our surroundings!

When I paint a landscape, I slow down, look at the earth in a different way, as a gift that I am a part of... I feel so much gratitude.
