QUESTION
Climate & Ecosystems
Why is art an important way for you to express sustainability values?
Nature is just about the best art there is, in and of itself, without modification its incredible, and inspires so much of what we do as people, especially art, so sustaining and ensuring our ecosystems are allowed to thrive and grow is critical. Sharing one of my favorite pictures I've taken out and about - a sunset in SW Washington in late spring '21.
I actually participated in a study on disaster preparedness in Portland, specifically in the event of a major earthquake, last year that was really illuminating to how much logistical effort there is to maintain access to water, food, electricity, etc in the event of severe disasters. Perhaps partially because the PNW is generally insulated from such events, but there was tons of stuff I had never even considered.
Was bummed to see ewg promoting organic produce as any kind of alternative - pesticides can and are still used in organic produce production, and organic crops takes significantly more land and water than genetically modified crops do, while producing much lower yeilds.
Was definintely shocked at how much water Im still burning through on the daily, per this calc, despite being someone who makes pretty significant efforts to limit water use.
