Calculate Your Carbon Impact
SDG #13 Climate
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Climate & Ecosystems
Save water by planting indigenous plants to your region.
Indigenous plants or native plants are those that originated in a given geographic area without human involvement or that arrived there without intentional or unintentional intervention of humans from an area in which they originally originated. Native/Indigenous plants and grasses have adapted to the soil in which they grow and usually use less water compared to non-native plants. When your entire garden is native plants, large water savings can be achieved annually.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was it like to mend your clothing? If you are skilled at mending, what tips do you have for others?
Erica Toussant 4/24/2022 6:04 AMEvery now and then I mend a small hole in clothing or try to tailor something a little bit to myself. I actually mended a dog toy today, though! I think it's wasteful to discard clothing (or dog toys) because of small holes that can be fixed. I am really not skilled at this, so I only take on small projects that I think I can pull off. I have to go to my mom for help on bigger projects. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat is one way you will reduce your carbon foorprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?
Erica Toussant 4/18/2022 9:47 AMReducing my carbon footprint would be best done from the standpoint of the food I eat. My housing and transportation are what they are and are unlikely to change/be able to change much. While my use of animal-based products less than the average person, I could be doing more to reduce these products. I also hope to walk to the Tuesday farmer's markets this year about 2 miles from my house to help with buying local and reducing some of the packaging that comes when buying produce. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat surprised you about the two produce lists? How will you use these lists for your grocery shopping? Have you used these lists before?
Erica Toussant 4/06/2022 3:41 PMI don't find either of these lists particularly surprising. The Dirty Dozen generally consists of produce that can be eaten in full whereas the Clean Fifteen almost all have some sort of "shell" or protection. I think it makes sense there would be pesticides found in higher amounts on produce that are more susceptible to insects, etc. I do not know if I will change my shopping habits. I would potentially consider buying organic of the Dirty Dozen items, but I like most of the foods in the Dirty Dozen and would not plan to cut them out of my diet. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Erica Toussant 4/05/2022 6:13 AMI think there are many issues that will come from a society that stays indoors and on screens. We fail to continually develop social skills, and I believe there are negative health impacts, both mentally and physically. I recently got a puppy. While it's difficult adjusting my schedule, I am outside more to walk her or take her to the dog park. I am meeting other dog owners and feel better about myself being active. Saturdays have become our more lazy days though! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodWhat was it like to actively listen to someone? How did both people and the conversation benefit from active listening?
Erica Toussant 4/03/2022 10:02 AMI think I used to be a better active listener. Over the past few years, I feel as though I have deviated to a point where I'm thinking about what I will say next. Actively listening does feel better in some ways, as I know I am making them feel heard by being attentive.
