  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Basic Needs & Security
What is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?

In relation to the other actions that are water related, I have been limiting my showers to less than 5 minutes to save a major amount of water. I will also use less water when washing the dishes by only using one sink full of water instead of keep having to drain it because I leave the tap on.

      Hi Austin,
I am impressed at your water saving abilities! I will have to try doing dishes like that as well.

What was it like to mend your clothing? If you are skilled at mending, what tips do you have for others?

For this action, I repaired my sisters jacket, which had a hole in it when she fell down while running. I have some experience of sewing as pretty much my whole family knows how to do it because of their hobbies. My tip for others is to take it slow and not rush through it.

How does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?

Having a better work-life balance allows me time to alleviate myself from the pressures of school and work. Having this time to reflect allows me to think about the sustainable choices that I have/can make in the future.

With 5-minute or less showers reducing your water footprint, what do you plan to add next to your water conservation habits?

To further add to my conservation habits, I like the idea someone else brought up about having one bowl of water for washing dishes and not continuing to run the tap. It is definitely beneficial for saving a lot of water.

The third week of this challenge has gone by, and it has been quite similar to last week. It has become more uniform in the ways I participate in the challenge and this has definitely taken root as a normal part of my schedule. It has also been great reading through everyone's great posts describing their experiences doing so many different things. It is very cool to see the ways people are helping the environment and looking back at their experiences.

This second week of doing the eco challenge was similar to the first yet it definitely feels easier. Since I have been doing it for a week it has become more routine for me. It is good to feel like you are helping the environment and it does not seem to be that big of a change. It is a nice compromise to be helping the environment and also saving time and having some self-reflection.

For this first week of the challenge, it has changed how I feel about making myself feel more helpful for saving water and helping the environment. Sometimes I would sit in the shower for a long time just to feel refreshed. Due to this challenge however, making it limited to less than five minutes makes me feel more energized and wanting to get out as quick as possible. Also, when I have a workday, which I would also consider a school day as well as my job, it is nice to take a breather and relax.
