I think we could learn a lot from the elders of various tribes as they know how to preserve natural resources and have done so for centuries. Their connection to the natural world is remarkable and we could gain so much from following their lead.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhy is it important to honor native and indigenous peoples and cultures? What have you learned that is important to you? If you identify with or are a member of an indigenous group, how does your community practice sustainability?
Shawna Stonum 4/29/2022 7:35 AMWhile I am not documented, two of my great grandmothers were both the last documented Cherokee tribe members. It feels like a loss to not know their stories, language or culture as part of my own heritage. I suspect it was robbed from them in some manner as well.
I think we could learn a lot from the elders of various tribes as they know how to preserve natural resources and have done so for centuries. Their connection to the natural world is remarkable and we could gain so much from following their lead. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat surprised you about the two produce lists? How will you use these lists for your grocery shopping? Have you used these lists before?
Shawna Stonum 4/28/2022 8:15 AMI am surprised that much of what I eat is in these lists... and not on the good side. It might not be possible to abstain from those on the bad list, but I can wash food and pay attention.
No, I have not used these lists before. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat was a linking factor across this group of SDGs?
Shawna Stonum 4/28/2022 8:08 AMUnderprivileged status is one common factor. Access to resources or availability of equitable resources is limited in areas that underprivileged/BIPOC people generally live. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWho is affected by water insecurity in your region? How are they affected? How are you impacted by water insecurity?
Shawna Stonum 4/26/2022 9:20 AMRural families in the area I lived for years had poor water quality. We lived with water being pumped from the creek using an old filter system that clogged every so often. We couldn't drink the water, even if it was boiled, but did our dishes and laundry in it. There was one well on the farm to provide potable water for several family units. We generally had to buy water from town since the well would go dry during the summer or when usage was high.
Today, I live in an area where water quality isn't a big issue, though I still don't trust the systems and filter water for drinking. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhy is equity for gender diverse individuals important for a just and sustainable society?
Shawna Stonum 4/15/2022 11:46 AMDiscrimination against people for any variety of reasons helps no one. Everyone needs food, shelter, meaningful work and relationships, health care, etc. Access to these things should not be restricted because of biases. God loves us all. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was something important you learned about renter rights and affordable housing?
Shawna Stonum 4/07/2022 2:21 PMMuch of this I already knew since I have lived in rental housing for most of my life. I didn't realize that most rentals were individually owned, however... I have always rented from for profit management companies, some of which could be considered slumlords. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was a linking factor across this group of SDGs?
Shawna Stonum 4/06/2022 2:10 PMPoverty and lack of access to vital resources. So sad that in 2022, there are people who still lack basic life sustenance. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat watershed do you live in presently? What is something interesting or unique about your watershed?
Shawna Stonum 4/04/2022 2:55 PMI live in the Puget Sound watershed. It is the second largest estuary in the country... curious to know where the largest is. Tons of information to read and could be reading a while. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityHow have you reduced your purchasing habits and what would you like to do next to reduce your consumption habits?
Shawna Stonum 4/04/2022 8:01 AMI am thinking to return to the use of bar soaps as opposed to liquid body wash. It certainly would take up less space in my shower. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat was surprising about the ingredients in your cleaning supplies, personal care, and pet products?
Shawna Stonum 4/01/2022 11:09 AMI have been reading about ingredients in pet foods. I guess the surprise would be that not all pet food makers are creating products that are safe for pets causing stomach issues in more sensitive animals. We have been more cognizant of the food ingredients for our own furries at home, and buying only products that have natural ingredients.
