Sustainability is a long term goal (such as a more sustainable world), while SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT refers to many processes and pathways to achieve it (such as sustainable agriculture, production and consumption, research and technology transfer, etc).

Residential appliances like gas-powered furnaces and water heaters vent pollution outside, but when using a gas stove, the burning gas emits pollutants that are unvented and can cause or worsen respiratory illnesses.
