Sophia Spector 4/27/2022 8:55 AMPlants, seeds, baked goods, thrifted treasures, and hand made items are all sustainable ways to give gifts for upcoming birthdays, graduations, etc. -
Sophia Spector 4/27/2022 8:51 AMI don't recommend this unless you have very open communication with your gift givers / recievers, but a fun way some friends and family and I have made greener choices is by only giving consumable or thrifted gifts, and getting creative by using recyclables to make our own wrapping. -
Sophia Spector 4/27/2022 8:49 AMI am learning of some vegan snacks I hadn't considered before this challenge. -
Sophia Spector 4/18/2022 9:21 AMThis challenge has helped me be accountable for not using disposable plates/bowls at work. I would probably have been lazy if I didn't know I had to check in and track my progress. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityHow did you incorporate using an entire vegetable (skins, peels, tops, and stalks) during one of your meal preps? What's something new you're going to try that is a zero-waste meal practice?
Sophia Spector 4/18/2022 9:19 AMI never realized how easy it is to eat an entire apple -- even the core-- until I went on a camping trip. We practiced leave no trace and ate the entire fruit, carrying out just the stem. The rest we carried in our bodies :) Lol. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodWhat place in your region are you most excited to visit during your staycation?
Sophia Spector 4/18/2022 9:18 AMI'm excited to visit the botanical gardens now that it's spring and flowers are blooming. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was the tastiest meatless or vegan meal you ever had or had recently? Did you make it? Can you share a recipe?
Sophia Spector 4/04/2022 12:49 PMThis is one of my favorite vegetarian cook books, from one of my favorite online book selling platforms: https://www.thriftbooks.com/w/the-best-veggie-burgers-on-the-planet-101-globally-inspired-vegan-creations-packed-with-fresh-flavors-and-exciting-new-tastes_joni-marie-newman/408547/#edition=6981091&idiq=9878333 -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was it like to mend your clothing? If you are skilled at mending, what tips do you have for others?
Sophia Spector 4/04/2022 12:46 PMIt feels good to take care of my things, and sewing is a fun activity. I mended a quilt that my friend sewed for me, which came apart at some seams after being washed. Quiltmaking is a great way to use fabric scraps which might otherwise be disgarded-- it's an ancient art rich in history! I also plan to sew a button back onto my winter coat today.

Sophia Spector 4/04/2022 12:43 PMOn bringing my own tupperware and utensils to work-- I am very grateful for the Kindergarten kitchen, which is stocked with dish soap, and has a nice place to leave my things to dry :) If anyone else is looking for a good spot to wash their stuff after lunch, that's a good spot :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat plastic or single-use items do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted?
Sophia Spector 4/04/2022 12:41 PMOn noticing my use of single use plastics: When out and about in the city I sometimes get thirsty and don't have a place to refill my waterbottle- that's when I resort to buying a plastic waterbottle. I bet everyone would use re-usable water bottles more if there were more public waterfountains. On the other hand, this may cause water waste, and/or present sanitation concerns. I do think that most fast food places will let you fill your re-usable waterbottle at their soda machine. That's what I'll try next time!
