REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWho is affected by water insecurity in your region? How are they affected? How are you impacted by water insecurity?
Megan Slagel 4/27/2022 7:36 AMThe individuals most affected by water insecurity in my region are those the live in poverty. These individuals face the difficulty in affording to keep their water on, otherwise they may face a shut-off from the city. I am very grateful to have had the privilege in my life to always have running water. However, I worked with children in low-income households for many years, and witnessed what water inequity can do to their mental health. All people deserve the right to access clean water, as many in Flint did not have the right to for many years. Each of these instances contribute to the water justice movement, and I encourage everyone to continue learning about the movement. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhy is it important to honor native and indigenous peoples and cultures? What have you learned that is important to you? If you identify with or are a member of an indigenous group, how does your community practice sustainability?
Megan Slagel 4/27/2022 7:32 AMThe mass genocide of indigenous tribes in the U.S., the erasure of indigenous history in U.S. public schools, and the continuing pillage and harm done to indigenous individuals and reservations should be the motivator to honor, respect, and learn about indigenous peoples in the U.S.. The most I have learned regarding indigenous communities has been outside of education (where I learned virtually nothing). One of my close friends is an indigenous person, and I have learned so much from their family about indigenous peoples. I also volunteered for a non-profit in Colorado, inputting data from a survey taken by indigenous individuals on a reservation in Colorado. Learning about the culture of indigenous peoples has further motivated me into advocacy for underrepresented communities. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityHow is food equity and access linked to a sustainable future?
Megan Slagel 4/27/2022 7:22 AMFood equity is at the head of the food waste justice movement. There is an abundance of food waste every day from wealthy communities, whether it is residential, or through waste from restaurants. Meanwhile, there are millions of individuals living in poverty in the U.S. that, at times, have to choose between keeping their lights on at home, or eating. A portion of those living in poverty also experience homelessness, and may not often have a warm meal. Balancing the accessibility to food, a basic human need, can prevent the expiration and disposal of food. Overall, this would reduce waste in landfills and decrease the demand for certain foods, resulting in a more sustainable future. -
Megan Slagel 4/27/2022 4:42 AMThis past Saturday, April 23rd, I had to opportunity to participate in a climate justice rally in Royal Oak! It was organized by multiple organizations in Oakland County, most notable Turn Oakland County Green. It was thrilling to see so many people march together and advocate for a cleaner, more sustainable planet. -
