Dan Schiaffo 4/25/2022 9:08 AMOnly five days left. We are comfortably ahead of Chicago but let's not take our foot off the gas!-
Brooke Rolph 4/25/2022 2:43 PMStill in first place in the Slalom Market competition. We are also ranked 68 out of all 276 teams! That's pretty good

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityDo you have any tips for others on finding locations that accept products for safe disposal?
Dan Schiaffo 4/25/2022 9:07 AMThis was a timely lesson. On our neighborhood cleanup this week, someone found a bunch of prescription pills and neither of us knew exactly what they should do with them. Ultimately, we decided to just take them to the police station (which is not wrong), but the information I got reviewing this goal, has given me more knowledge for future situations. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat is one way you will reduce your carbon foorprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?
Dan Schiaffo 4/24/2022 3:41 PMThis was pretty eye opening for me and a good catalyst to start taking more focused action. Things I have already done as a result. Switched my banking to one that does not make loans to the fossil fuel industry, offset my emissions from a planned trip to the UK, and signed up for fully renewable power with my electric utility.-
Dave Ghosh 4/25/2022 8:42 PMHey Dan, how did you offset emissions for your flight? Did you opt for a non-stop flight versus one with multiple stops? It's something I have in mind as well while planning trips to India.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat ecological or xeriscape landscaping practices do you have? How has your landscape changed from these practices?
Dan Schiaffo 4/22/2022 8:49 AMThis may be a bit premature but since I'll only be doing it after this challenge is over, I'm posting about it now. I'm moving to a new home that already has the backyard grass removed and replaced with a no water landscape. As soon as I possibly can, I will be doing the same to the front yard and then putting raised planters on top so I can grow food, not grass! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhy is it important to honor native and indigenous peoples and cultures? What have you learned that is important to you? If you identify with or are a member of an indigenous group, how does your community practice sustainability?
Dan Schiaffo 4/20/2022 9:13 AMGrowing up on the East coast, I was never exposed to native and indigenous peoples other than in history books. Since I moved to the PNW, it's been completely different. It's been amazing to not only learn more about the traditional owners of these lands but to (mostly) see them given the respect and appreciation that is their due. -
Dan Schiaffo 4/20/2022 9:08 AMI'm in the process of moving to a new house and yesterday, I called to get the power organized. It was cool to see that for an extra $12 / month. I was able to get 100% renewable power for the house. Such a small price to pay for such a but impact! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhy is equity for gender diverse individuals important for a just and sustainable society?
Dan Schiaffo 4/18/2022 9:31 AMThis was very interesting for me to read more about. As a 45 year old white cis male (a word I still don't fully understand), I've seen a fair amount of change in this space in my life. My approach has generally been to "do no harm," which is to say, allow people the freedom to do what they wanted as long as it didn't negatively impact me. But, I never really took the extra step to learn more about these subjects. Taking this initial step has given me a better understanding of how to better understand and support those whose gender identities are different than my own. I still have a lot of work to do but I'm willing! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodWhat is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?
Dan Schiaffo 4/17/2022 7:12 AMI know I mentioned this previously, but this exercise has inspired me to create a neighborhood FB group for my city dedicated to organizing events to help beautify the city. It's called Beautify Bremerton and even though it only started last week, it now has over 130 members. It's clearly an issue that many people care about! -
Dan Schiaffo 4/16/2022 5:26 PMI did some research on induction cooking today and was thrilled to see just how much more efficient it is over gas cooking. I really enjoy cooking and have always thought that cooking with gas was the way to go. I'm about to move into a house with an induction cooktop so wanted to learn a little bit more about it. Looks like I'll be in great shape!
