REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodHow does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Michelle Salter 4/25/2022 12:47 PMI'm able to maintain energy better through out the day, and into my evening. This has led to more "bandwidth" at the end of the day when I'm go to the grocery store or preparing dinner. I don't just grab whatever off at the grocery store, I take time to shop more sustainably (bring bags, select organic items, choose better packaging). Also I make dinners more often and remember to compost and recycle properly. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Michelle Salter 4/20/2022 1:17 PMAs I spend more time outside I realize that I can breathe easier. I'm more ok with just being present and alone with my thoughts then when I spend lots of time inside and on my phone/screens. It seems that screen time, especially with social media, our minds find it hard to take a break. Being outside, by choice, not just because I need to run errands or go to work, helps to slow things down. Studies have shown that social media increases anxiety and I understand that more and more. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhere does the energy in your region come from? Which energy is a renewable source?
Michelle Salter 4/20/2022 1:12 PMI didn't know that DC has a goal to decrease their emissions by 56% by 2032. Also we have electric public buses and solar initiatives, to help residents and business owners with setting up solar panels. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat area of climate action are you most passionate about and why?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat ecological or xeriscape landscaping practices do you have? How has your landscape changed from these practices?
Michelle Salter 4/20/2022 1:04 PMPlanting wildflowers that are indigenous to my area around the community garden in our neighborhood. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat is one way you will reduce your carbon foorprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?
Michelle Salter 4/20/2022 1:02 PMI'm trying to do one vegetarian meal a week, I found a vegetarian cookbook at a used book store and I'm looking forward to trying out the recipes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat is one invasive species in your region and how does it impact your region's ecosystem?
Michelle Salter 4/18/2022 6:42 AMMustard garlic & English Ivy are both invasive species in the DMV area. Spent my Saturday removing them at Rock Creek Park in DC. English Ivy is a fast growing vine that takes over the area it grows in and is very hard to remove. Both plants take natural resources from other ground foliage. Now is actually a good time to remove mustard garlic, before it produces seeds. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Michelle Salter 4/12/2022 9:55 AMI love poshmark and thredup for resale clothing and accessories! Also I can sew, but will be taking a class in how to tailor clothing, this way I can use fabric from thrift stores to make my own clothes or tailor clothing from those stores to my body. Oh and there are tutorials online on how to dye, embroidery, and embellish clothing and accessories so that you can repurpose existing pieces in your wardrobe. -
Michelle Salter 4/12/2022 9:51 AMHi! I'm joining this because I have been working on living more sustainably for the past year or so. I believe that it takes time to change our habits and you don't need to be "perfect" with it. Just changing one thing a month or every other month is going to work out better for most people. Also check out @shelbizleee on youtube she is a great resource to learn about changes we can make in our everyday life and homes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat plastic or single-use items do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted?
Michelle Salter 4/05/2022 6:15 AMI have started to use handkerchiefs more often. Especially when I just have a runny nose.
