Climate & Ecosystems

Save water by planting indigenous plants to your region.

Indigenous plants or native plants are those that originated in a given geographic area without human involvement or that arrived there without intentional or unintentional intervention of humans from an area in which they originally originated. Native/Indigenous plants and grasses have adapted to the soil in which they grow and usually use less water compared to non-native plants. When your entire garden is native plants, large water savings can be achieved annually.

Victoria TX office volunteered for our communities Earth Day Clean Up!  4 employees and their guests!  It was fun and interesting.  My husband found a $10 bill and a co-worker found a $20 bill.

If you have a garden, have you considered upgrading your plants and grasses to indigenous/native plants?

I do not have a garden because I do not have a green thumb. After researching native plants I will definitely try having this type of garden/landscape.  It benefits the environment and is low-maintenance. It requires little to no use of fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides making your surroundings safer for family and pets and it requires less water to maintain.

What was something you learned from your friends during Earth Month?

I learned that old, unused, or broken computers, tablets, phones, and other electronics can be recycled for free by stores, like Office Depot.  This saves natural resources and reduces pollution.

Recycle.  I have a large recycle can in my home and recycle can in my office.  I am always reminding others to pay attention to items that should be recycled.

I agree . If I use a paper tea of coffee cup, I know I am a bit crazy, but I try to re-use them at least 3 times before I dump it in the recycle bin. Or I use my steel or porcelain cup.
