Climate & Ecosystems
Learn About The Climate & Ecosystems SDGs
SDG #13, 14 & 15
I will spend 10 minutes learning about these SDGs.
Basic Needs & Security
Take 5-Minute Or Less Showers
SDG #6 Water & Sanitation
I will save up to 6 gallons (23 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers. Tip: Use a timer to practice or count to 60 a few times.
Climate & Ecosystems
Create & Share A Love Letter, Poem, Song or Picture
SDG #13, 14 & 15
I will express my love and gratitude for our planet by writing a love letter, poem, song or taking a picture. I will share it with others on my social media channels, in person, or as an Earth Month Ecochallenge feed reflection.
Health & Equity
Learn About Equitable Food Access
SDG #10 Reduced Inequalities
I will spend 15 minutes learning about equitable food access and how I can advocate for healthy and fresh food in my region.
Climate & Ecosystems
Save water by planting indigenous plants to your region.
Indigenous plants or native plants are those that originated in a given geographic area without human involvement or that arrived there without intentional or unintentional intervention of humans from an area in which they originally originated. Native/Indigenous plants and grasses have adapted to the soil in which they grow and usually use less water compared to non-native plants. When your entire garden is native plants, large water savings can be achieved annually.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityHow is food equity and access linked to a sustainable future?
Max Potthoff 4/05/2022 1:48 PMI'm thinking about how the terms that we use to mean well can often times end up perpetuating the systems that lead to inequity in the first place. Food apartheid: radicalized access to healthy affordable food was a helpful reminder about how our collective experiences inform how we see the world. It is misleading to use "desert" when describing an area with a low concentration of food access, because areas that lack access to healthy food are the product of discriminatory zoning codes, lending practices, and other policies. "Using the term desert implies that the lack of healthy and affordable food is somehow naturally occurring and obscures that it is the direct result of racially discriminatory policies and systematic disinvestment in these communities." Recognizing how decisions made over time lead to the inequities we see around us can help us be intentional about laying the groundwork for a sustainable future. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat was a linking factor across this group of SDGs?
Max Potthoff 4/05/2022 1:33 PMI didn't know that the SDGs are linked by *three* post-2015 agendas for action – the Paris Agreement, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
It was helpful for me to see how achieving the primary goal of the Paris Agreement - to keep the average global temperature rise well below 2C degrees and as close as possible to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels - was vital to the success of these SDGs. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhy is art an important way for you to express sustainability values?
Max Potthoff 4/05/2022 1:25 PMEnvironmental professionals in the 21st century will face technical changes and challenges yet unseen throughout the course of human history; art is important to stay grounded in our practice and appreciate the beauty and animacy of the natural world. As Thomas Berry says, "the universe is a communion of subjects, not a collection of objects."
