Alyssa's actions
Economy & Communities
Induction Cooking
SDG #7 Energy
I will spend 15 minutes learning about induction cooking and consider if I could add this to my food prep methods.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG #3 Health & Well-Being
I will replace 20 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Climate & Ecosystems
Reduce Single-Use Plastics
SDG #14 & 15
Throughout the day, I will note the single-use plastics I use and consider the reusable options available to me.
Basic Needs & Security
Support A Renters Bills of Rights
SDG #1 No Poverty
Of nearly 44 million U.S. renter households in 2019, more than 45% paid rent equal to 30% or more of their gross household income. I will spend 20 minutes learning about a renters bill of rights and affordable housing.
Education & Livelihood
Volunteer to Tutor
SDG #4 Education
I will volunteer to tutor in my community at least once this month.
Education & Livelihood
Work-Life Balance
SDG #8 Work & Economy
During the workday, I will schedule time for daily rest during work days to practice work-life balance.
Health & Equity
Practice Mindfulness
SDG #3 Health & Well-Being
I will spend 20 minutes each day practicing mindfulness.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat was it like to practice mindfulness? If this is a practice for you already, what was something new you understood in practicing during Earth Month?
Alyssa Phillips 4/30/2022 6:19 PMThere was one time where I was meditating in the forest behind the library. I was listening to all the different birds, the wind howling and rustling through the trees, and I actually started to cry because of how naturally beautiful this planet is, and that we are constantly destroying these beautiful moments in nature. I fear that we will one day create a world where nature is uncommon, and it truly breaks my heart. I don't want to live in a world like that. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodHow does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?
Alyssa Phillips 4/30/2022 6:16 PMAn imbalance of work and life leads to doing practices that are less mindful, simply because you lack the time and mental energy for it. Allowing more of a work life balance for everyone would give them the time and energy to make choices that they know are ultimately more eco conscious. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat plastic or single-use items do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted?
Alyssa Phillips 4/30/2022 6:14 PMThe single use plastics I found myself using most were food wrappers, as well as plastic drinking bottles/ containers. I am pretty good about avoiding single use plastics in most areas, but it is very difficult to do with food since pretty much all of it is packaged in plastic. I substituted using the plastic produce bags at stores by bringing my own bags and using self checkout. -
Alyssa Phillips 4/30/2022 6:11 PMI originally participated for my environmental studies class, but I am always trying to find ways to help the environment through my own actions. I chose actions that were a challenge to me, but not so much so to the point where I wouldn't do them. I hope to continue these daily habits like mindfulness, checking my single use plastic consumption, and spending more time outside and exercising. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodWhat do you enjoy about supporting others who are learning?
Alyssa Phillips 4/30/2022 6:07 PMWhen I am tutoring, I find that it is such a fulfilling job because you can see the stress that a student comes in with, and usually by the end of our session they are more relaxed and express lots of gratitude to me for helping them feel more secure in their work. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Alyssa Phillips 4/30/2022 6:05 PMCultures that spend most time inside and on screens reflect a lack of appreciation for the outdoors and the beauty that nature has to offer. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was something important you learned about renter rights and affordable housing?
Alyssa Phillips 4/30/2022 6:03 PMMost people are renters, so supporting renter's rights is supporting the rights of most citizens. I will continue to advocate for renter's rights, especially being one myself. -
Alyssa Phillips 4/06/2022 6:39 PMI spent a lot more time walking instead of driving; luckily it has been warm outside so the walks have been quite enjoyable. I try to stop and smell flowers or look at interesting plants along the way.
