Devaa Haley Mitchell 4/04/2022 12:01 PMHi peeps-
One of the items that I'm taking on this month as part of my EcoChallenge is "Know Your Produce," which was listed as an option on the EcoChallenge site.
I thought I was relatively aware of the potential toxin load in the produce I choose, but I was really NOT aware of many of the items on this list below.
So check out this list of what's called the "Dirty Dozen." So these are produce items where you DEFINITELY want to buy organic! And if you cannot get organic, it's probably best to skip it.
EWG'S DIRTY DOZEN FOR 2021 (taken from https://www.ewg.org/foodnews/summary.php)
1. Strawberries
2. Spinach
3. Kale, collard and mustard greens
4. Nectarines
5. Apples
6. Grapes
7. Cherries
8. Peaches
9. Pears
10. Bell and hot peppers
11. Celery
12. Tomatoes
Of the 46 items included in our analysis, these Dirty Dozen foods were contaminated with more pesticides than other crops, according to our analysis of USDA data.1 (The rankings are based not only on the percentage of samples with pesticides but also on the number and amount of pesticides on all samples and on individual samples. See Methodology.) Key findings:
• More than 90 percent of samples of strawberries, apples, cherries, spinach, nectarines, and leafy greens tested positive for residues of two or more pesticides.
• A single sample of kale, collard and mustard greens had up to 20 different pesticides.
• On average, spinach samples had 1.8 times as much pesticide residue by weight as any other crop tested.
• Hot peppers and bell peppers had the most pesticides detected, 115 pesticides in total and 21 more pesticides than the crops with the second highest amount – kale, collard and mustard greens.

Devaa Haley Mitchell 4/04/2022 11:40 AMHi all-
I'm excited to be sharing the adventure of this EcoChallenge with you. I know that climate change is such a pressing issue, and I am eager to do my own part in our household to make a difference. I know it can seem like there are such HUGE issues that we cannot do much to turn it around individually. But if we do what we can... and then we SHARE what we are doing... and inspire others to do also take action, together we can make a very big difference.
We recently also lost a dear friend and colleague, Philip Hellmich, who worked with us at Shift Network. He was an amazing man who touched many lives... loved to garden and spend time in nature. So I am dedicating my Earth-based service in his honor this month. -
