REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was something important you learned about renter rights and affordable housing?
Samantha Meyer 4/29/2022 9:42 AMThis is a subject I will take the time and learn more about. Affordable housing is a real struggle and there are many different approaches communities are taking. Generational and traditional dwellings that also heat and cool a house more sustainably are both interesting have multiple positives outcomes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators? Do you have a favorite pollinator?
Samantha Meyer 4/29/2022 8:50 AMPollinators pollinate the majority of flowering plants, making many things we eat come to harvest. They play a crucial role. I love bees and butterflies. Even ants that get peonies to open are amazing. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityHow is food equity and access linked to a sustainable future?
Samantha Meyer 4/26/2022 6:19 AMFood equity and access is so important for healthy, sustainable communities. Reducing waste, affording people a choice of fresh and affordable food helps provide healthier eating options and in turn can reduce health issues and foster cooking and healthy meal planning. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhy is equity for gender diverse individuals important for a just and sustainable society?
Samantha Meyer 4/26/2022 6:13 AMTreating others fairly, with the same respect anyone would want for themselves is an important step in creating a just and sustainable society. We are all humans having experiences in life and being treated as other does not promote a sustainable society. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityDo you have any tips for others on finding locations that accept products for safe disposal?
Samantha Meyer 4/20/2022 12:48 PMOutside of a quick internet search, contacting your local city offices. They usually can direct you in the right direction. Read that Walgreens was the first national chain to have drop boxes for expired or unwanted medications at there locations, regardless of where the medications were purchased. Convenient. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityHow have you reduced your purchasing habits and what would you like to do next to reduce your consumption habits?
Samantha Meyer 4/18/2022 6:35 AMI have reduced my purchase habits even though I naturally do not purchase a lot of things. Which is why I do not check in on this action daily, only when I purchase something. Having a goal of paying off a loan does also help one to want to reduce purchases and put that money towards paying off the loan. :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodWhat is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?
Samantha Meyer 4/14/2022 9:26 AMVolunteering at the food bank helps to get food to people (and pets) who need it before its expiration date. There are so many local organizations one can get involved with. We have one called Companion Cats, which helps to spay and neuter the stray cat population and find as many homes as possible. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat was it like to practice mindfulness? If this is a practice for you already, what was something new you understood in practicing during Earth Month?
Samantha Meyer 4/14/2022 9:22 AMMindfulness is something I have tried to cultivate in life prior to this challenge. Being really present can be a challenge. When I spend time with my grandmother I have always noticed how observant she is of so many things that most people miss. Naturally curious, appreciative and thankful. She is a great example of living mindfully. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhere does the energy in your region come from? Which energy is a renewable source?
Samantha Meyer 4/09/2022 8:33 AMThey energy used at my home is from Consumer's Energy (electric) and Semco Energy (gas). Consumer's Energy has a lot of information available on their website. They have a Clean Energy Plan and they moved their goal to be coal free up to 2025. Currently about 11% is from renewable energy, 12% from customer efficiency programs, 11 % in energy storage, and most from natural gas and coal. There is so much more interesting information on the Consumer's website. Semco did not have as much information readily available and I will spend some more time to search further. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat watershed do you live in presently? What is something interesting or unique about your watershed?
Samantha Meyer 4/06/2022 7:26 AMI live within the Battle Creek watershed. It seems like a good size watershed, at 196,750 acres in southwest Michigan. 68% of the watershed is in agricultural use, 13 % forested, 10% wetlands and 9 % is urban/rural. Most of the aquifers are composed of Marshall Sandstone and there are 5 dams along the Battle Creek River. I am going to read more on this subject and see how I can get involved further.
