Elizabeth Malmstrom 4/22/2022 9:06 AMHappy Earth Day!🌎💛.
Earth Day was established on 4/22/1970. Influenced by eye opening publications like Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring” (documenting the use of toxic pesticides). It became the voice for the environmental consciousness, and put environmental concerns at the forefront! It’s an honor to celebrate this day! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Elizabeth Malmstrom 4/19/2022 11:22 AMWhen I was obtaining my 200 hour yoga certification one of the most important things our yogini stated was that the body is like water it must always keep moving. A culture that is stagnant (i.e sitting all day looking at their screens) is not healthy. The body, mind, and social nuances are lost. In order to have a healthy culture there must be some sort of connection to nature, and the world around us. -
Elizabeth Malmstrom 4/18/2022 6:49 AMA few tips I just read about this weekend to reduce plastic use. 1. Zero-Waste Hair care-Use powder to foam shampoos that come in a compostable pouch. 2. Fashion-Pick classic Cotton Jeans-Jeans are often made with synthetic fabrics that can release microplastics when washed. Instead look for 100% cotton. 3. Recyclable Deodorant-The deodorant industry creates 15 million pounds of waste yearly. Look for brands that use responsibly sourced recyclable paper packaging. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat was it like to practice mindfulness? If this is a practice for you already, what was something new you understood in practicing during Earth Month?
Elizabeth Malmstrom 4/12/2022 7:16 AMI believe practicing mindfulness is the ability to check in with yourself, and those around you. It also pertains to being mindful of ones actions. This is particularly important when it comes to being a good steward of the Earth. I was always taught to leave things as you found them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat was surprising about the ingredients in your cleaning supplies, personal care, and pet products?
Elizabeth Malmstrom 4/08/2022 8:49 AMI was surprised to see Butlyene Gylcol in so many skincare products. It's used as a conditioning agent, and is a derived from petroleum. According to research it is said to be okay for daily use, but not for sensitive skin. A possible substitute would be a more natural product with only a few ingredients (i.e using coconut oil for a make up remover). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat plastic or single-use items do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted?
Elizabeth Malmstrom 4/06/2022 4:02 PMI changed my plastic toothbrush for an oral care. Although you have to change the brush part at least it's not the whole piece of plastic! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women and girl's equitable participation or representation in your community? Do you experience these barriers?
Elizabeth Malmstrom 4/03/2022 1:19 PMWhen I was younger I did observe many women not being encouraged to speak up (especially in the science related fields). It has changed over the years, and I see many brilliant women in positions of power. However, it still is an upward battle. -
Elizabeth Malmstrom 4/01/2022 5:58 PMI spoke at lunch (while meeting with an outside vendor) about the benefits of Yoga, and Pilates. Especially as it helps to reduce the affects of stress.-
Elizabeth Wypasek 4/01/2022 6:02 PMI teach yoga and fitness classes. Mindfulness and yoga are wonderful ways to decrease our stress and be present.
