REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Equity Safe Disposal of Medications and Household ChemicalsDo you have any tips for others on finding locations that accept products for safe disposal?
Emily Kane 4/29/2022 12:23 PMThe website they recommended is really helpful. My goal for next week is to drop off old antibiotics at one of the sites. I didn't realize how many we have in our area. A great resource!

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Equity Support Indigenous & First Nations CommunitiesWhy is it important to honor native and indigenous peoples and cultures? What have you learned that is important to you? If you identify with or are a member of an indigenous group, how does your community practice sustainability?
Emily Kane 4/29/2022 12:22 PMIt's important to know the history of the land, what happened before us, and its original people. I really like the concept of checking in on social media with original indigenous names, it'll bring awareness to the topic and introduce people to the history of the land.
The Adirondack Museum (Adirondack Experience) had an exhibit that highlighted the history of the United States and all of the native people to this land. It had items from the past and recorded voices so you could hear their native languages. Really eye opening and such a great exhibit.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & Livelihood Research Impact InvestingAfter learning more about investing, how can you increase positive impacts and decrease negative impacts?
Emily Kane 4/29/2022 11:56 AMI can have more of a positive impact by having better intentions about investments. Right now I have everything invested with things that match my retirement goals. By spending more time researching, I can do more good.

Emily Kane 4/27/2022 5:57 AMHi Climate Crusaders!
I'm picking up two new beehives this Sunday and wanted to share some information about the sustainability of the company I've been using. We have 1 flow hive which has observation windows to observe bees without disrupting them by opening the hive. We also have multiple pollinator houses ( https://www.honeyflow.com/products/flow-pollinator-house ) that house native solitary bees. It's been so fun to watch them move into the house! I had no idea how many types of bees we have locally. Bonus: I also get to watch them pollinate my flowers and plants.
The company does great sustainability work (read more in the link below) and has been a great hive for my bees.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & Communities Find out where your energy comes fromWhere does the energy in your region come from? Which energy is a renewable source?
Emily Kane 4/26/2022 9:35 AMLocally, I use National Grid power for electricity and gas. The recommended resources offered a lot of inside into the energy world, all of the different types that are available, and how it's generated/transmitted/distributed. Mostly everything I use at home is powered by electricity, and I use gas for my car. I'm really interested in solar and/or wind power. Something I will definitely look into in the near future.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Equity Learn About Participation and RepresentationWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women and girl's equitable participation or representation in your community? Do you experience these barriers?
Emily Kane 4/20/2022 12:09 PMThe learn more section of this action lists some great resources. I enjoyed looking at all of them, they brought up some fantastic points.
Many women play a certain role in their society and climate change can make things more difficult. Certain countries don't allow women to seek alternate methods of transportation (bikes, driving eco friendly cars, etc). Many women aren't allowed to make their own choices, or they're not paid enough to switch to alternative options that might be more sustainable.
As a woman living in the United States, it's socially acceptable for me to make my own choices in terms of transportation, clothing, etc. and I always try to look for eco-friendly/sustainable products. There are also a lot of products made specifically for women that companies are now making more eco friendly. Clothing, razors, menstruation products. There are lots of options these days and luckily we can choose what we want to buy and use. -
Emily Kane 4/20/2022 10:37 AMI've had to heat my greenhouse over the last week or so. The nights are too cold for the new plants causing a lot of extra work and $ for me. With unseasonably high and lows temps throughout the year, it's becoming more difficult to grow low maintenance flowers and produce. We constantly have to be on our toes for shifts in weather/temps. The Earth Month eco challenge is helpful in that our little daily actions can become habits, hopefully helping to alleviate these extreme weather changes or at least not making them worse.
