I'm so thankful for this EcoChallenge!  It has been a daily reminder to slow down, everyone handles situations differently and that is ok, even if they don't in turn give me room to grieve or celebrate in my own way.  I can only control what I can control and need to stop and think about what really matters at the end of the day.

Vacation - asked waiter which fish were caught by local fishermen v. what was shipped in.  All the "daily catch" menu items I ordered were DELICIOUS!!

Spent time at the beach - saw fish I haven't yet been able to identify (possible young gar) and watched young seabirds flying close to the rock outcrop where they hatched, and was within 3 feet of a large sea turtle!

Went to Virgin Islands National Park Visitor Center and talked with a Ranger about how climate change is impacting the islands - every aspect of life on and around an island is felt, from increased strength and frequency of hurricanes to health of the reef systems - everything is interconnected.

Short story long - in the car with a former neighbor and friend of my parents - she retired from TX A&M as a hazardous waste manager but "talks to professors all the time."  We are friendly, although the chasm couldn't be wider in terms of political beliefs.  We are talking about the weather and she offered to share the science behind it.  So, turns out climate change is a hoax and methane alone is the culprit, we actually don't have enough carbon in the air...  "Tell me more about that..."  "Do the scientists at A&M all share that opinion?..."  She talked herself out and I avoided the argument - but best of all, I don't think she'll try to rope me into the climate and other political conspiracies in the future.  It wasn't constructive in the sense that we solved a problem, but it was in terms of keeping the door to future conversations open and not disrupting the other aspects of her friendship.  We have to live with our family, friends & neighbors no matter how far away on the political spectrum they are from us - and we can, we must.

So, of course, I will be going on vacation, without my laptop, and missing the last week of the challenge - but I'm still rooting for a TEXAS VICTORY!!!

What was a linking factor across this group of SDGs?

https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/ is a great place to learn about the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.  When you look at them all together and begin to see the connections - it is fascinating!  Like if you make clean water accessible, then girls don't have to spend their whole day retrieving it - that frees them up for school, helping at home, contributing to other areas.  The local connections between draught/famine/animal scarcity/natural disaster to migration, wars  effect all of us globally.  We are connected to the earth and all its people.  The SDGs help us realize that and act responsibly.

What was it like to create a readiness plan? Did you find other resources you could share?

The biggest part of the plan is to scan and store important documents, a contact list and special photos and store digitally.  I've packed an emergency bag for a grab and go emergency and have purchased a portable power station (solar panel to be added later) plus some backpacking items that could be used now for fun or later in a Texas Freeze or spring tornado situation.  Part of the plan now is to also look for ways to become more climate-resilient: use less water, A/C or Heat and to get better at minimizing and organizing "stuff."

I can tell you as a past insurance agent those digital photos are important.

I am adding some of the things you have done to my list. Digital is a thing now and completely did not think to scan important documents.

What was it like to mend your clothing? If you are skilled at mending, what tips do you have for others?

I have pledged to avoid fast fashion - it is just bad all the way around.  I'm investing in quality (when it goes on sale) and scaling back my closet.  Most people only wear 20% of their wardrobe 80% of the time anyway!  Good clothes can be altered, re-hemmed and remade.  I recently took a blazer with long sleeves and refashioned it to have sleeves just above the elbow.  Global Warming Wardrobe?!!

I missed my goal of becoming Mighty Oak in Q1 - but am close and hope to add that moniker to my Comerica Outlook signature soon!
