    Climate & Ecosystems
What ecological or xeriscape landscaping practices do you have? How has your landscape changed from these practices?

Planting seeds and plants that are native to my area.  They will attract Bees and Birds to help with the season growth cycles in the Yard.   These Plants use less water and, in most cases, either can be 'split" at the end of the season or they "reseed" themself.   This will give me more time to relax and enjoy nature.

How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

I express my personality and creativity by wearing clothes that I have purchased used and gently worn.  I rotate my clothes by season which i can then wear what is applicable for the season.  Before I buy "new clothes" I send clothes I no longer wear to be "shared" by sending them to the local secondhand store.  I make sure the clothes are clean and can be actually worn by another user.   Clothes that are "business items" are sent to "My Sisters Closet" which is also shared.

It's not easy as it sounds.  It's easy to get into the habit of thinking of a response before a person completes their sentence.  Listening shows empathy, comradery and understanding.  It's like exercising a muscle, the more you do it the easier it becomes.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What was it like to actively listen to someone? How did both people and the conversation benefit from active listening?

Earth day is right around the corner.  Looking back over the last two years, this Earth Day is very special.  I'm aware of the environment and the weather-related changes that occurred.   I'm planting perennials that are natural to our area.

Yesterday (4/13/22) was a great day!  It was cold; however, the Sun was out, and it was very bright and peaceful.  I was Downtown and able to see the beginnings of Spring.

What surprised you about the two produce lists? How will you use these lists for your grocery shopping? Have you used these lists before?

I was surprised that Kale could have a high probability of pesticides.  We consume about 4 bunches on a monthly basis.  It's a good reason to grow an organic garden.  After reading the materials I feel more comfortable purchasing frozen berries/fruit that are just as healthy as "fresh" fruit and still have the vitamins and flavor I'm looking for.

Why is it important to honor native and indigenous peoples and cultures? What have you learned that is important to you? If you identify with or are a member of an indigenous group, how does your community practice sustainability?

Speaking with a Classmate who is First Nation, there is an underlining fear for herself and her female relatives to turn up missing and no one would look for them.  There is an assumption the person left on their own and will return.  Later, when the person is found, they're deceased.  HB 1725 is a new Washington State Bill and it's a start.  However, there are two things have caused some advocates to question how effective the law will be: #1 - It will be voluntary for law-enforcement agencies to issue alerts for people reported missing.  #2 many Indigenous communities lack Internet access and access to electronic highway signs, to display the alert of a missing person.  I hope more work is in progress to help with the issues of #1 and #2
