Discrimination by type of job/sector, social and cultural factors, and safe and accessible infrastructure.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Basic Needs & Security
What surprised you about the two produce lists? How will you use these lists for your grocery shopping? Have you used these lists before?

I didn't realize that so many greens and reds are in the dirty dozen list especially since I buy a lot of items from that list rather than the clean fifteen. Going forward, I will keep in mind these items and buy less to reduce my exposure to toxic pesticides.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate & Ecosystems
What is one way you will reduce your carbon foorprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?

Reusable water bottles, taking shorter showers, turning off lights when not in use, thrifting, and freezing food. Start in baby steps and do one thing at a time until you get used to it.

Take shorter showers! I usually play music and shower to 1-2 songs.

    Health & Equity
What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?

    Maggie Hwang's avatar
    Maggie Hwang 4/06/2022 9:58 AM
Poor physical health (lack of exercise, vitamin D), negative impact from social media (never see the reality of things), and damaged eye sight!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate & Ecosystems
What plastic or single-use items do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted?

    Maggie Hwang's avatar
    Maggie Hwang 4/05/2022 6:49 AM
I regularly use plastic utensils when I get takeout - I can easily substitute that by getting a set of reusable utensils!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Economy & Communities
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Maggie Hwang's avatar
    Maggie Hwang 4/04/2022 11:47 AM
Learn to style from what you already have rather than relying on popular trends! Try out capsule wardrobe and see how many outfits you can think of from a limited selection of clothing. You can also express your personality and creativity through thrifting and upcycling.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Health & Equity
What was it like to practice mindfulness? If this is a practice for you already, what was something new you understood in practicing during Earth Month?

    Maggie Hwang's avatar
    Maggie Hwang 4/04/2022 10:23 AM
I did a 5 minute yoga break that I found on YouTube - it felt nice/relaxing after sitting around all morning.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Education & Livelihood
How does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is very important. We need to be able to recognize when to set boundaries in order to protect our well-being and health. I like to take 5-10 walks or yoga breaks throughout the day and always stay hydrated. If we don't take care of ourselves, we will feel burnt out and unhappy.
