Climate & Ecosystems
Stop Flying
Planes produce the most carbon emissions out of any vehicle. On average, they emit 1/4 tonne CO2 equivalent per hour of flying. https://www.carbonindependent.org/22.html Goal: - Stop flying domestically. Take trains or buses. - Only fly internationally when absolutely unavoidable.
Climate & Ecosystems
Stop Driving Gas Cars
Gasoline-powered cars emit from 8-15 kg CO2 per gallon of fuel. https://www.epa.gov/greenvehicles/greenhouse-gas-emissions-typical-passenger-vehicle#:~:text=typical%20passenger%20vehicle%3F-,A%20typical%20passenger%20vehicle%20emits%20about%204.6%20metric%20tons%20of,8%2C887%20grams%20of%20CO2. Buying gasoline, which is produced from oil, funds the massive oil companies, who continue to drill for more oil - destroying environments and emitting ever more GHGs. Challenge: Everyone stop driving gas cars. Use public transportation (if in Seattle, it has one of the nation's best systems!), drive an electric vehicle, bike or walk.
Climate & Ecosystems
Plastic and Packaging Free
I will commit to not buying any new product that contains plastic or packaging (excluding medications, toiletries etc.). Thus I will buy unwrapped produce, food from a bulk store (where you bring your own reusable containers) and only used products (from thrift stores, eBay- Used, Craigslist, Swappa, Gazelle, buyBackWorld etc.). This will ensure that I am neither supporting the further creation of these packaging materials, nor their disposal - both of which have a devastating environmental impact.
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG #6 Water & Sanitation
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Economy & Communities
Mend Clothing
SDG #9 Industry & Infrastructure
I will mend a piece of clothing for myself, family or friends.
Basic Needs & Security
Get To Know Your Watershed
SDG #6 Water & Sanitation
I will spend 60 minutes learning about my watershed and the particular water issues my region faces.
Basic Needs & Security
Become Fully Vegan
Animal agriculture contributes 15%+ of GHGs and devastates environments all over the world (ex. the Amazon is being cleared for cattle ranches & growing cow feed). I will go fully vegan so I am no longer contributing to the destruction of the planet. This includes food, products, cosmetics, soaps, clothing, furniture, medication etc. I will review what ingredients are derived from animals and avoid these in all products: https://www.peta.org/living/food/animal-ingredients-list/
Climate & Ecosystems
Buying Only USED
I will commit to buying all products USED, instead of new at a store. The processes of creation and extraction of the materials to serve global over-consumerism are devastating environments globally. The current systems are not sustainable. Humanity needs to immediately move to systems of creating lasting products and re-using & recycling materials. Get everything you need used - including smartphones, computers, clothes, shoes, appliances etc.! Try thrift stores like Goodwill, or sites like eBay- Used, Craigslist, Swappa, Gazelle, BuyBackWorld etc. If you buy used, you have no negative environmental impacts. Reduce your footprint!

REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat watershed do you live in presently? What is something interesting or unique about your watershed?
Avery Huberts 4/04/2022 8:23 AMSeattle is in the Cedar River and Tolt River watersheds. The Cedar River originates in the Cascade Range. About two-thirds of King County uses water from the Cedar River Watershed, which provides drinking water for 1.4 million people in the greater Seattle area. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?
Avery Huberts 4/04/2022 8:05 AMReduce water for washing dishes - only wash dishes when needed. Short showers - turn water off. Turn water off when using sink.
