Did you know paper Easter eggs exist? We just got some to hide for our son. Right on!

This is pretty rewarding for sure. I think I'll do this again next time!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Basic Needs & Security
What is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?

While water isn't in short supply here in upstate NY, I do try to be aware of the amount of natural gas we burn to heat our water. We try to minimize the amount of hot water we use.

What was it like to mend your clothing? If you are skilled at mending, what tips do you have for others?

I can't say that I'm that skilled at mending. I just don't like to throw things away when there's still life left in them. I have a huge amount of marine grade epoxy for filling knot holes in wood projects. When a sole starts to peel away from my shoe, a small amount of epoxy will fix it right up.

I'm wondering if Sustainable Seafood will net us many points. I believe most of the team doesn't eat fish and I just realized we can only have 5 daily activities. I might suggest the Explore Your Area daily, but I don't know how universal this is. My son and I get around town exploring new things a lot.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Would you consider using an induction cooking surface? If you have used one before, what do you like about induction cooking?

    Chris Holman's avatar
    Chris Holman 4/09/2022 12:11 PM
I would absolutely use one. I don't think I'd tear out the resistive electric stove we have now, but when it breaks I know what I'm replacing it with. I already look forward to how easy it would be clean the thing!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Economy & Communities
Where does the energy in your region come from? Which energy is a renewable source?

    Chris Holman's avatar

It seems New York is doing fairly well in its' drive to reduce energy sector emissions. We barely touch coal these days and derive most of our power from hydroelectric, wind and nuclear. With all our rivers, and waterfalls, Hydro is our best renewable energy source. Now we need to work on our natural gas heating... Also, I read once that New York has the worst (longest) average commute in the country. Working on public transit could go a long way toward reducing our carbon burn.

What ecological or xeriscape landscaping practices do you have? How has your landscape changed from these practices?

My wife and I are slowly replacing as much of our lawn as possible with perennial flowers, fruit trees, and crop spaces. We've only moved in a couple years ago and have a long way to go. The landscape itself hasn't changed much yet but I've gotten very familiar with every nook and cranny of the property which just feels "right" as both a homeowner and earth conscious animal just trying to do my best haha.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What was the tastiest meatless or vegan meal you ever had or had recently? Did you make it? Can you share a recipe?

    Chris Holman 4/09/2022 11:54 AM
The ecological damage caused by high density cattle operations was the major factor in my decision to go vegetarian almost 20 years ago. Over time I've softened a little to the concept of animals as food but only in extreme moderation and with fairly strict, earth friendly diligence. I still can't bring myself to eat meat, but I'm working on my empathy towards those who do, when done as ethically as possible.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How did you incorporate using an entire vegetable (skins, peels, tops, and stalks) during one of your meal preps? What's something new you're going to try that is a zero-waste meal practice?

As the father of a 3 year old, our food waste is a daily source of angst for me. I haven't been successful in getting to zero waste, but I try to guide us to less wasteful practices as best I can.
