Nancy Hoban 4/27/2022 2:32 PMEveryday I make an effort to reduce the amount of waste that goes into a landfill. Over the past 8 months, I've had a lot of success posting items on Freecycle.org. You can communicate directly within the platform and not give out your personal email. This month alone, I have given away 5 items using this platform! Here is the link for those interested: Freecycle: Front Door -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was it like to create a readiness plan? Did you find other resources you could share?
Nancy Hoban 4/27/2022 2:21 PMI downloaded the Red Cross Emergency Contact Card and provided a copy to my mom and dad so they can post it on their fridge (and keep one in their wallet/car). I will also post one on my fridge in my new home. If anyone wants the file, please send me an email! It's also attached here - hopefully you can access it.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodWhat was a linking factor across this group of SDGs?
Nancy Hoban 4/23/2022 6:54 PMI was surprised to learn that the pandemic has caused a drop in reading proficiency in children. I thought with more people staying home, they were more likely to read as a means of entertainment (and/or to help pass time). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWith 5-minute or less showers reducing your water footprint, what do you plan to add next to your water conservation habits?
Nancy Hoban 4/20/2022 7:20 PMI now turn off the water while I condition my hair. That saves 3 minutes of running water!-

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsHow can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place? Was there a new place in your region that was exciting to learn about and visit?
Nancy Hoban 4/19/2022 7:39 PMAs I search for a new home, I am exploring new neighborhoods and learning about different areas that originally were not on my radar. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat surprised you about the two produce lists? How will you use these lists for your grocery shopping? Have you used these lists before?
Nancy Hoban 4/19/2022 7:35 PMI was surprised that of the 12 fruits & veggies on the dirty dozen list, I regularly eat 11 of them! I am looking forward to having my own fresh garden to avoid all the pesticides. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat is one invasive species in your region and how does it impact your region's ecosystem?
Nancy Hoban 4/17/2022 6:32 PMI was very surprised that Feral Cats are considered an invasive species and have contributed to the extinction of more than 60 species of birds.-
Nancy Hoban 4/27/2022 2:04 PMUPDATE: As a result of this finding, I talked my friends into catching the Siamese mix that has been living under their porch. I made arrangements for them to drop him off at the Buddy Foundation in Arlington Heights where I volunteer. He was not microchipped and was not neutered, but was living outside for at least 4 months. He doesn't seem feral since he is very friendly with all the volunteers and will likely get adopted quickly. Glad to give him shelter and save some birds in the process!

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Nancy Hoban 4/17/2022 3:43 PMGetting outside helps refresh my mind and my eyes. Staying inside watching TV and/or on the computer all day makes me feel lazy and unproductive. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?
Nancy Hoban 4/16/2022 3:01 PMI currently place buckets outside to collect rain and then use it to water my indoor plants. :) I definitely print less now that I know it takes 793 gallons of water to make 2lbs of paper. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodWhat is one thing you can do to help your community become more sustainable?
Nancy Hoban 4/16/2022 2:45 PMI asked my local library if they can add a Composting 101 session to their upcoming events calendar. Their virtual events are very popular and engaging, so the hope is to show people how easy it is to compost.
