  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Basic Needs & Security
What is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?

I am going to try to take shorter showers and to pay closer attention to my community's water usage information so I can try to make better choices that way too. I do not have a dish washer and I have only one sink. But, I have found a way to only run the water to soak a dish (and small stuff or cutlery goes inside bigger dishes), then I rinse quickly with as little water as possible.

What plastic or single-use items do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted?

Living in a motel, we use mostly plastic forks, spoons, and knives, but we are reusing what we have and not buying more. We only get compost-able cutlery sets from now on and we even reuse these as long as possible.

It's great that you're reusing your "disposable" cutlery sets! And the compostable ones are a better choice than the plastic ones since they're made of plant-based materials. Just keep in mind that they're not always actually compostable. Many composting facilities can't break them down, so they'd have to go into the landfill. It's a good idea to check with your local facility to find out what to do with them when they can't be reused anymore.
