"I'm participating in the eco-challenge because I want to be part of creating a more peaceful world, and that can only be done when we become more conscious about how destructive we are to the environment, and choose to make changes."

REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWould you consider using an induction cooking surface? If you have used one before, what do you like about induction cooking?
Beth Hedquist 4/01/2022 4:29 PMI have used an induction cooktop before. It was a portable one in an airbnb and it was a great alternative. I already have an electric stove, and my electricity comes from wind, so I don't have an incentive to purchase an induction cooktop at this time, but it was interesting to learn how much more efficient they are than gas. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodHow do you create new sustainability-related habits or change bad habits?
Beth Hedquist 4/01/2022 4:11 PMI find it easiest to add new habits over time. I have been working on this for several years and am now once again focused on new habits I can add. I add one or two habits until they feel like part of my normal routine, and then add another. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhere does the energy in your region come from? Which energy is a renewable source?
Beth Hedquist 4/01/2022 4:08 PMI have an arrangement with Arcadia which provides wind energy to me via Dominion Energy Corp. So my energy comes strictly from wind, which feels really good to me. -
Beth Hedquist 4/01/2022 4:02 PMToday is my first day with the eco-challenge and I'm still learning my way around the site but so far it has been fun and informative and has inspired me to step up my game in terms of sustainability. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat was it like to practice mindfulness? If this is a practice for you already, what was something new you understood in practicing during Earth Month?
Beth Hedquist 4/01/2022 3:54 PMI usually practice mindfulness through meditation but today I practiced it by just being aware and appreciative of my surroundings. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?
Beth Hedquist 4/01/2022 3:48 PMI will not flush the toilet as often. A practice I already have that reduces water is that I switched to wind energy and I don't drink from plastic water bottles. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityHow have you reduced your purchasing habits and what would you like to do next to reduce your consumption habits?
Beth Hedquist 4/01/2022 3:44 PMI have significantly reduced my spending habits as of a couple months ago. I eat out at restaurants much less, only purchase clothing I really need, and try not to buy other things that don't add to my quality of life significantly. My purchases today were to buy environmentally responsible items and to donate to a charity. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat plastic or single-use items do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted?
Beth Hedquist 4/01/2022 9:32 AMI purchased shampoo & conditioner that is not packaged in plastic. I also purchased bamboo cutlery for when I am eating out.
