Elizabeth Hansen 3/18/2022 3:21 PMFor actions at work, please consider joining the Periop Green Team – info below!TL/DR: sign up [here] to join the new Peri-Operative Green TeamSituation:Climate crisis continues to impact planetary health including the health of children. Health care is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and waste, and is responsible for 4.6% of global greenhouse gas emissions globally. The US healthcare system contributes to about 25% of those emissions and is responsible for 388,000 disability-adjusted life-years lost. Pediatric patients are directly impacted by climate crisis in many ways, including respiratory diseases from air pollution, mental illness caused by unsafe living environments, malnutrition from food insecurity, extreme temperatures, forced migration, and physical trauma from extreme weather eventsBackground:Climate change disproportionately affects the health of children, and affects pediatric surgical diseaseAssessment:Seattle Children’s Hospital has committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2025The operating rooms are a large part of hospital emissions and waste and we have many areas for improvementRecommendation:As health care workers, we are obligated to look after the health of the planet as it impacts the health of our patients. Join us in this important work!Reduce waste with sustainable procurement – prioritize reusable and recyclable options over single-use. Ensure proper disposal of all itemsDecrease emissions – use IV anesthesia or low flow volatile anesthesia, and eliminate high impact greenhouse gasses desflurane and nitrous oxideEducate ourselves – integrate climate change, impact and mitigation strategies within education for all OR staffExplore ways to decrease energy consumption in the ORsPlease sign up here to join! You’ll have an opportunity to choose action items that are important to you. Please forward to interested folks in the Peri-op group, add to weekly newsletters, and spread the word!
