I have learned to be conscious of what needs to be used up in the refrigerator on in the cabinets. Also, I am learning to use herbs and spices effectively, to make food tasty that would otherwise be bland.

The killdeer birds that have been hanging out in the horse paddock decided not to build a nest there, apparently. They are ground-nesters, but I think the paddock was a bit too open.

I made a vegan spinach/mushroom lasagna tonight, with mashed extra firm tofu instead of ricotta cheese. Everything I make is an experiment; I rarely follow recipes. We shall see how this one turns out.

I read an article about Active Empathetic Listening that was quite instructive. It made me realize how much I use the other person's speaking as a springboard to voice my own thoughts, instead of really listening to what they are saying.

Sunshine after snow in April is a portion of grace. It is still cold, but that is okay, I just add an extra layer of clothes.

It is funny how 25°F in late April here in Vermont can feel really, really cold, when the same temperature in February is balmy. It is all relative, and all in your perception.

I planted potatoes yesterday while it was snowing. They were last year's garden potatoes, sprouting and a little soft. The snow won't hurt them: I covered them up with a blanket of old hay. There were regular white ones, and also deep purple and pink ones.

Purslane and chickweed, which are common garden weeds, are edible and chock full of nutrients. Just be sure to correctly identify them.

I saw ramps--wild leeks-- today, on the drive home. They are on town land, so I could stop and harvest some. There were tons of them, so picking a limited number of them won't harm the stand. Nettles and fiddleheads will be coming up soon.

The bulb of garlic that I bought less than a week ago is sprouting. I have 6 or 8 sprouted garlic cloves already on the window sill, that have 5" lot 6" green tops on them. They are ready to go out in the garden soon, where each will hopefully produce a whole bulb.
