Dave Ghosh 4/30/2022 11:52 PMI started this month's challenge hoping to connect with like-minded teammates as well as work on concrete steps to reduce my carbon, water and energy footprint. I feel like I have made progress on all these fronts this month, but this is just the beginning, and I will need to keep the momentum and learning going! -

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Equity Learn About Equitable Food AccessHow is food equity and access linked to a sustainable future?
Dave Ghosh 4/30/2022 11:48 PMFood equity and access is directly dependent on the ability to increase and improve food security, and improving food security cannot be done solely by increasing agricultural output. Rather a systematic approach is needed - a core concept of such a systematic approach would be that food systems be democratically controlled and community stakeholders invest in and support a community food system. A community food system by definition is sustainable because it involves working within the context of a soil-to-soil system that enables the end-to-end production, distribution, processing, access, food consumption, and food waste management. -
Dave Ghosh 4/29/2022 2:57 PMHaha, no issues with that, Liam! I see we are back on 'equal' terms with Chicago now.
Nicely done, Team! -
Dave Ghosh 4/29/2022 2:17 PMTeam - Slalom Chicago appear to have done a massive end-of-week and end-of-month push today to surge ahead in the rankings and are sitting quite a bit ahead at Number 1.
If all of us can do our daily check-ins and daily actions for today, we should still be able to catch up with them, I think. Let's give it that final push!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Equity Learn About The Health & Equity SDGsWhat was a linking factor across this group of SDGs?
Dave Ghosh 4/28/2022 10:35 PMA linking factor is that it is various forms of inequality and lack of parity that is hampering the progress on these goals - the combination of lack of gender parity, income inequality is strongly correlated with trafficking, child labor, violence against and exploitation of women and children, and a corresponding shortened life expectancy. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Equity Safe Disposal of Medications and Household ChemicalsDo you have any tips for others on finding locations that accept products for safe disposal?
Dave Ghosh 4/27/2022 9:52 PMThis link should be bookmarked by anyone in the US for finding the nearest set of permanent sites/locations that will accept products for safe disposal:
https://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/pubdispsearch/spring/main?execution=e1s1 -
Dave Ghosh 4/26/2022 11:02 PM4 more days to go - Slalom Seattle still leads all the other Slalom teams, but nothing should be taken for granted, especially in this last stretch. Keep learning and checking in! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & Livelihood Learn About The Education & Livelihood SDGsWhat was a linking factor across this group of SDGs?
Dave Ghosh 4/26/2022 11:00 PMMy understanding may be oversimplified here, but the main linking factor I found across this group of SDGs (education, jobs, investment in sustainable development, slum dweller living conditions change) is that the pandemic not only adversely impacted the progress on these goals but also significantly turned the clock back on previous progress made on each of these goals in the past decades. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & Equity Support Indigenous & First Nations CommunitiesWhy is it important to honor native and indigenous peoples and cultures? What have you learned that is important to you? If you identify with or are a member of an indigenous group, how does your community practice sustainability?
Dave Ghosh 4/25/2022 8:35 PMOne important takeaway I have from reading about indigenous culture and rights is to remember that there is a fine line between appropriation and appreciation. I feel that this should be a constant grounding factor for all of us when engaging with any culture/heritage/background, and especially more so if the culture/people have historically faced injustice.
I liked that the author of this article (linked below), provided 4 concrete ways to honor and appreciate each of the 566 unique and federally recognized tribes in the US:
1. Support Native American Artists
2. Learn About (and Consider Backing) Native-Led Movements
3. Call Out Appropriation Because It's Offensive (and not just/simply because you know that a native person would not like it)
4. Support Non-Native Companies or Organizations that Actively Honor Native Culture and/or Creations
(This article from where I quoted the above is a pretty quick read:
