Climate & Ecosystems
Calculate Your Carbon Impact
SDG #13 Climate
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG #6 Water & Sanitation
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Climate & Ecosystems
Reduce Single-Use Plastics
SDG #14 & 15
Throughout the day, I will note the single-use plastics I use and consider the reusable options available to me.
Health & Equity
Communicate Constructively
SDG #16 Peace & Justice
I will use the communication methods I read about to practice effective, compassionate, and nonviolent communication with someone I interact with regularly (i.e., my roommate, parents, co-worker, partner, classmates, or children).
Health & Equity
Learn About Equitable Food Access
SDG #10 Reduced Inequalities
I will spend 10 minutes learning about equitable food access and how I can advocate for healthy and fresh food in my region.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG #3 Health & Well-Being
I will replace 30 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Health & Equity
Learn About Gender Diversity
SDG #5 Gender
I will spend 10 minutes learning about gender diversity.
Climate & Ecosystems
Support Local Pollinators
SDG #15 Life On Land
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 20 minutes researching which plants support local pollinators and plant some in my area.
Basic Needs & Security
Know Your Produce
SDG #2 Zero Hunger
I will visit ewg.org to learn about and use their Clean 15 and Dirty Dozen produce lists.
Health & Equity
Track My Purchases
SDG #10 Reduced Inequalities
Throughout the day I will track my purchases and then research the companies making these goods.
Climate & Ecosystems
Learn About Invasive Species
SDG #14 & 15
I will spend 15 minutes learning about invasive species and ways to reduce their impacts.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat is one invasive species in your region and how does it impact your region's ecosystem?
George Ghali 4/29/2022 2:29 PMIt's strange to think of house cats as being "invasive" but it totally makes sense. Most people don't think of a domesticated pet as being invasive, but the impact on the local wildlife (field mice, etc.) is real. -
George Ghali 4/29/2022 2:26 PMI feel like I am more aware and have started referring other people to information, which is really cool. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityHow is food equity and access linked to a sustainable future?
George Ghali 4/22/2022 11:10 AMI remember at 15 working at a grocery store in Las Vegas. Some people from the surrounding "desert" (literally in this case) would drive up to 90 minutes each way to do their monthly shopping. I never really considered the impact to the environment for all of those people on the road just to get food, as well as the trend toward frozen and canned foods for shelf life, which would also have an impact on both sustainability and overall population health. Given it was in Vegas they would also need to bring coolers full of ice to keep the food from spoiling on the way home. Crazy to think I have a Whole Foods, PCC, Met Market, Trader Joe's, QFC, and 2 Safeways all within 2 miles of my house!-

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators? Do you have a favorite pollinator?
George Ghali 4/22/2022 10:50 AMI regularly weed my garden but I hadn't taken the time to learn about local pollinators (some of which I've pulled up in the past!) vs. invasive species, etc. Weeding just got a little more complicated but a lot more impactful.-

REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat surprised you about the two produce lists? How will you use these lists for your grocery shopping? Have you used these lists before?
George Ghali 4/21/2022 11:14 AMThinking about how much I love stopping at the side of the road and buying cherries in the summer. Never occurred to me to ask about how they're grown. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat is easy for you to do when having a constructive conversation and what is challenging? What tips do you have for having a constructive conversation?
George Ghali 4/15/2022 11:29 AMAlways stick to the facts, or own your opinions as "how it impacted you". Nobody can argue with you on how something made you feel. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
George Ghali 4/15/2022 11:28 AMLack of human connection, lack of appreciation for natural beauty, less connection to the planet that sustains us and the sun that keeps the planet alive.-
Dave Ghosh 4/15/2022 11:09 PMOn a lighter (or predictive? :-)) note, this question reminded me of a very old sci-fi short story I once read where the humans sat in front of screens so long on 'smart chairs', that they evolved to a form where their limbs became vestigial and their spines fused with the smart chairs, and the crisis of the story involved the smart chairs co-opting the human brain and deciding that the rest of the body was useless and needed to be disposed off by any means necessary. Sorry for the tangent!

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat plastic or single-use items do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted?
George Ghali 4/13/2022 10:56 AMI am avoiding places that still use styrofoam or non-recyclable/-compostable containers
