I will read the article "Improving Water Conservation Through an Equity Lens" on WSP Insights.
Basic Needs & Security
Support A Renters Bills of Rights
SDG #1 No Poverty
Of nearly 44 million U.S. renter households in 2019, more than 45% paid rent equal to 30% or more of their gross household income. I will spend 20 minutes learning about a renters bill of rights and affordable housing.
Economy & Communities
Public Transportation Practice and Advocacy
I will use public transportation to get around - for work, errands, leisure. Car culture not only contributes to our emissions, but makes our local communities less usable (pollution, space, sound, etc). To advocate for the use and expansion of public transit, I should use it! If I don't use it for a day, I should engage or learn more about public transportation in my area.
Education & Livelihood
Plan A Staycation in Your Community
SDG #11 Communities
For an upcoming vacation, I will plan a staycation in my region.
Economy & Communities
Induction Cooking
SDG #7 Energy
I will spend 10 minutes learning about induction cooking and consider if I could add this to my food prep methods.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsCan you make it to Net Zero?
Elaine Gamolo 4/25/2022 8:56 PMI did it twice - once as the Teen activist that sparked behavioral change and the second time as the Politician driving policy change. Both times I did not make it to Net Zero unfortunately. I improved the second time around but was still surprised by how much (or how little) certain actions affected emissions. Even with medium-high level efforts, it was really a struggle to cut back for all the damage we have done over the years and it goes to show that gradual policy (while still better than no change) is still detrimental and we, as a society, need to be more aggressive and conscientious in how we consume, how we travel, how we transport, and how we build. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat are the climate and disaster risks in your region?
Elaine Gamolo 4/25/2022 8:16 PMThe major climate and disaster risk in my region is flooding, along with heat island effect. My census tract area is not necessarily super prone to flooding, but the areas adjacent to my neighborhood are, so even if my street doesn't flood, it still effects me and limits where I can and cannot go. A hurricane or major storm would cause havoc on both the Hudson and Hackensack River and I would probably be stuck. We have a lot of impervious surfaces and our water systems definitely get inundated very quickly. Additionally, all of the impervious surfaces along with the lack of tree canopy can cause it to be super hot. The urban heat island effect can make it very uncomfortable for our communities and also adds a huge stress to our power grid. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was something important you learned about renter rights and affordable housing?
Elaine Gamolo 4/22/2022 10:58 AMAs a renter, renter rights and affordable housing is incredibly important to me. Something I learned was that I could send a letter and make note to a new owner regarding notice of where my security deposit was placed. My apartment that I've been living in has changed owners over the years and I was never really notified about my security deposit. I plan on moving in August/September, so the Tenants' Rights in NJ is something I can definitely refer back to for guidance if there are issues ending my existing lease, as well as signing a new lease elsewhere.
I think everyone has the right to safe and decent housing and it is pertinent to pay attention to housing issues in or near your community. The NIMBY mindset greatly affects everyone and hinders the growth of our communities. It's comical to see individuals boast about their great towns and people and how progressive they are, yet constantly reject housing policy that welcomes renters and those who need affordable housing near good schools, amenities, and transit. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat surprised you about the two produce lists? How will you use these lists for your grocery shopping? Have you used these lists before?
Elaine Gamolo 4/22/2022 10:45 AMI was more surprised by the Clean Fifteen list. I love eating pineapple and mangoes, so I was glad to see them on the Clean Fifteen list. I was disappointed in seeing the Dirty Dozen list, especially since I love going strawberry, apple, and peach picking in New Jersey. These lists are definitely something to keep in mind when grocery shopping, and if/when I can't eliminate such produce from my diet, I need to be extra thorough in washing them and whatnot. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat watershed do you live in presently? What is something interesting or unique about your watershed?
Elaine Gamolo 4/06/2022 12:07 PMI currently live in the Lower Hudson watershed. Despite living closer to the Hackensack River, my watershed actually encompasses the Hudson and East River! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was the tastiest meatless or vegan meal you ever had or had recently? Did you make it? Can you share a recipe?
Elaine Gamolo 4/04/2022 2:29 PMI recently had an amazing vegan "cheezesteak" from Renegades of Sunset in Industry City. Instead of beef it was made from seitan and included sautéed peppers & onions, red pepper spread, and cheeze sauce. Their entire menu is vegan! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?
Elaine Gamolo 4/01/2022 9:34 AMAfter calculating my water footprint, I was happy to read that I was below average. However, I learned that a lot of my water consumption isn't actually my water usage at home but through what I ate and my shopping and recycling habits. One way I can reduce my water usage is to actually cut down on shopping. It takes a lot of resources (water and the like) to make something and frankly, I probably didn't need that piece of clothing, thing I found on Amazon, etc.
It's small, but it makes a difference, but if I'm ever running the faucet in the kitchen or have some leftover water that has been standing out, instead of letting it go down the drain I will use that water to water my plants in my apartment. -
Elaine Gamolo 3/23/2022 5:32 AMLooking forward to Ecochallenge 2022 and learning from the actions, but also everyone else participating!
