REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhy is it important to take care of pollinators? Do you have a favorite pollinator?
Becca Desai 4/22/2022 12:11 AMPollinators are vital to the production of many food crops and provide a service essential to the survival of many native plants. We can take steps to support these and other pollinators through plant selection and simple gardening practices.Locally native plants attract native pollinators. Native plants offer nectar, pollen and other nutrients in quantities that native pollinators need. We should grow more locally native trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants in our gardens.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat plastic or single-use items do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted?
Becca Desai 4/01/2022 11:24 PMin our home, we are making a conscious effort to reduce our use of SUPs. We have several reusable totes for groceries when we go grocery shopping. When we buy vegetables, we don't put them in the plastic bags available to pack them in. Instead we directly put them in the cart and then at check-out, we put them in our totes, for eg, limes, tomatoes, cucumbers, bunches of greens, and other large vegetables.
when we put cooked food or leftovers in the fridge, we use plates (mostly stainless steel plates that last forever!) to cover the dishes instead of covering them with a plastic wrap. We also each have our own metal water bottles that we carry everywhere with us. If there is any plastic that does need to be disposed, we recycle it if it is recyclable through Rumpke, otherwise we sort it out for a few weeks in our garage, and then take it to CRRH (Cincinnati Recycling and Reuse Hub, which is one of the most delightful places we have discovered in the last couple of years, which will responsibly recycle or reuse almost anything under the sun that you do not need, and Rumpke will not accept! Please check them out at https://www.cincinnatirecyclingandreusehub.org/-
Deborah Jordan 4/05/2022 7:23 PMWow - don't remember seeing SUP before. I am trying to use more small cloth bags for produce.

REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityHow did you incorporate using an entire vegetable (skins, peels, tops, and stalks) during one of your meal preps? What's something new you're going to try that is a zero-waste meal practice?
Becca Desai 4/01/2022 11:03 PMIn an effort to make zero-waste meals, I don't peel most vegetables before cooking, but rather cook them with their skin on, as that retains more nutrients for us. If some parts of the vegetables are a bit bitter or too hard to chew even after they cook, like the hard stalks of some greens, or the heads (tops) of the vegetables that we invariable chop away, or skins of some vegetables, I put all these together with some water and seasonings to make vegetarian broth. To make it more nutritious, I add a fistful of any dry lentils I have at home. Let the broth boil, and then simmer for an hour or so, then strain out the soup. It is a delicious and nutritious vegetarian broth. The boiled vegetable scraps can be cooled, blended and mixed with dirt in your garden. If you don't want to make a broth from the scraps, you can put them in your compost bin.-
Deborah Jordan 4/05/2022 7:26 PMI cooked dandelion greens today. Yes, I will start a container in the freezer with those extras to make veggie broth although I feel ok about composting OR feeding our worm bin.
