"Promote small and daily consumer-focused conservation efforts. With the gradual introduction of personal environmental responsibility, people will become more familiar and passionate about advocating and working towards top-down policies and petitioning the government for more substantial changes. Carissa's actions
Economy & Communities
Unplug
I will unplug all unnecessary devices after use, or leave items unplugged until needed.
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG #6 Water & Sanitation
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Basic Needs & Security
Compost/Organic Waste Redistribution
I will set aside my organic materials to be sent to compost instead of disposing of them in the trash/general disposal. Thereby reducing the organic waste left to decompose in landfills and generating Methane Gas.
Basic Needs & Security
Make Zero-Waste Meals
SDG #2 Zero Hunger
I will cook 1 meal(s) with zero waste each day.
Economy & Communities
Mend Clothing
SDG #9 Industry & Infrastructure
I will mend a piece of clothing for myself, family or friends.
Climate & Ecosystems
Support Local Pollinators
SDG #15 Life On Land
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 30 minutes researching which plants support local pollinators and plant some in my area.
Education & Livelihood
Share Your Eco Habits
SDG #11 Communities
Through my social media channels, in person, or as an Earth Month Ecochallenge feed reflection, I will share with others an environmentally friendly habit I have cultivated.
Economy & Communities
Create A Readiness Plan
SDG #9 Industry & Infrastructure
I will develop a readiness plan for my household in the event of an emergency.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG #3 Health & Well-Being
I will replace 60 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.

Carissa Denehy 4/30/2022 11:13 PMIt's been fun and super informative. A lot of the challenges helped me with goals I've had in mind for awhile. -
Carissa Denehy 4/29/2022 9:17 AMIt's a little odd, how I have been better at doing and completing the tasks that I designed/made custom for this challenge than the ones that were proposed or offered. I think it has to do with personal pride or the passion that comes from completing an idea that you had. -
Carissa Denehy 4/29/2022 1:02 AMI got to take my dog out to the dog park today. Also reflected on the impact of cars and how far off the future of sustainable vehicles seems when considering the cost for the average American. -
Carissa Denehy 4/27/2022 11:46 AMToday was a very busy day but I managed to continue with my daily habits. Most of them have become 2nd nature to me and I can do them without thinking. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was it like to create a readiness plan? Did you find other resources you could share?
Carissa Denehy 4/26/2022 2:29 AMMost counties including Monterey have city readiness plans/action plans. Googling those phrases will bring up most of what you need. Even looking at resources your insurance companies offer like renters insurance or home insurance, especially in CA. They need thier clients to be prepared. There are tons of readiness resources online. I printed emergency contact sheets for my brother and family with our contact info, medical history, etc. I worked with my mom to determine different meeting points in CA or nearby states and printed out maps and directions in case the power/internet is out. I would really like physical maps of CA and surrounding states so I would probably have to buy some at REI. The hardest part is budgeting for emergency supplies. But even a little is better than nothing. As of now, we have water, granola bars, small first aid kits, and flashlights in all the cars (3). We need to pack and plan go bags for each person, inside all the cars and then our home go-bags. We agreed to spring clean and keep all of our outdoor gear and camping supplies in easy-to-reach boxes for easy packing in an emergency. I want to invest in a Berky water filter but those are very expensive. As are long-distance radios, the really good ones require training and annual permits, so are also very expensive. Probably most interestingly I've followed several preppers on social media that provide really good advice and tips and tricks. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?
Carissa Denehy 4/16/2022 2:18 AMAfter taking the test, my personal footprint is below the average but still more than I thought. I would like to collect my grey water moving forward. I plan on starting a garden in the fall and it would save a ton of water by not using fresh and clean tap water for my plants.-
Hailey Meyer 4/26/2022 12:38 PMHello Carissa, I love the idea how you are finding ways to decrease your carbon footprint! I want to create a garden once I have a perminent place to live and I love the idea of using my own grey water. Thanks for sharing

Carissa Denehy 4/16/2022 2:16 AMFriday, my SO and I drove to Santa Cruz with our dog to go hiking. We picked a new park this time called Nisene Mark, and it was beautiful as always. We were limited in dog friendly trails so we stuck to the main path but took a side trail to reach the creek. Spent about 3 hours outdoors and I got to see my first banana slug. -
Carissa Denehy 4/14/2022 12:00 AMMended small tears in my clothing today. It's a lot easier to fix clothing that isn't denim because the repairs are SO visible and distinct. It's really interesting to sit back and self-reflect on why I want my repairs to look invisible and realize that I don't want it noticeable because mending items can be attributed to poverty. I grew up poor and my mom hated having to send me to school like that because of the social connotations. It's still like that today really.
Anyways, since I don't want to visibly mend my denim jeans that have worn out in the thigh, I'm going to try the fashion trend of extending the tear to the back of the leg. Who knows? -
Carissa Denehy 4/13/2022 11:42 PMI really like my daily challenges because they are easy to integrate into my schedule since so many just a few extra steps. Like unplugging my items after I am done, and putting any non-edible organic items in a special container for compost. Its helped me spend a little more time with my loved one and pet as I stay in the present and enjoy my time outside of work and education. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Carissa Denehy 4/08/2022 12:21 PMI believe that people become detached from a connection with the environment. Something I notice frequently is seeing all of these beautiful and pristine locations that cater to tourists and keep clean, making it feel like there isn't a problem.
