Spend Time Outside

SDG #3 Health & Well-Being

I will replace 15 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.

COMPLETED 10
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate & Ecosystems

Save water by planting indigenous plants to your region.

Indigenous plants or native plants are those that originated in a given geographic area without human involvement or that arrived there without intentional or unintentional intervention of humans from an area in which they originally originated. Native/Indigenous plants and grasses have adapted to the soil in which they grow and usually use less water compared to non-native plants. When your entire garden is native plants, large water savings can be achieved annually.

What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?

Spending too much time indoors or in front of screens makes us forget what life is for.  Technology can be both a burden and a blessing. As an environmental scientist I can understand how technology like GIS, plant ID apps, etc can make us better at protecting the environment. But it's a double-edged sword, where we can become too reliant on technology and the consumerism that comes with it.

Thank you for sharing Caitlyn. I always say to myself that I only need to spend  the utmost minimum amount of time on a computer screen or TV or smartphone, and the rest of time that I am awake, I try to be outside in nature, or looking outside the window to a tree, or birds or clouds and sunrise/sunset.

What was it like to mend your clothing? If you are skilled at mending, what tips do you have for others?

My friend's pants ripped a hole in the middle of brunch so I thought it was the perfect opportunity to fulfill my eco challenge! My best tips for mending

My best tips for mending are 1) Having iron-on patches (that you can cut to size) one hand and 2) picking up a multi-pack bag of different colors of embroidery floss. Embroidery floss can be separated by strand and is cheaper than trying to have a spool of every color of thread for miscellaneous clothing repairs. Iron-on patches on the inside of the clothing can't be seen, but re-enforces the repaired area.

How do you create new sustainability-related habits or change bad habits?

One of my favorite enviro-friendly habits is replacing paper towels with "unpaper towels" for everyday messes such as cleaning counters or spilled juice.

I still use disposable paper towels for pet or bathroom-related cleanups but have replaced my disposables with forest-friendly paper towels from Who Gives A Crap brand. I used to go through dozens of rolls of paper towels, and now I use about 2-3 rolls a year!

I made my own unpaper towels but check out Marley's Monsters for ready-made ones and more info on how well they work to cut down on waste. After 2 years of use, they aren't as vibrant looking, but still work wonders on cleaning up spills.

What is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?

Will make greater effort to eat less meat as it has a great impact on water usage.
