Pieter de Bod 4/12/2022 3:20 PMThank you for sharing Caitlyn. I always say to myself that I only need to spend the utmost minimum amount of time on a computer screen or TV or smartphone, and the rest of time that I am awake, I try to be outside in nature, or looking outside the window to a tree, or birds or clouds and sunrise/sunset.

Basic Needs & Security
Take 5-Minute Or Less Showers
SDG #6 Water & Sanitation
I will save up to 6 gallons (23 L) of water each day by taking 5-minute showers. Tip: Use a timer to practice or count to 60 a few times.
Economy & Communities
Mend Clothing
SDG #9 Industry & Infrastructure
I will mend a piece of clothing for myself, family or friends.
Education & Livelihood
Work-Life Balance
SDG #8 Work & Economy
During the workday, I will schedule time for daily rest during work days to practice work-life balance.
Basic Needs & Security
Calculate Your Water Footprint
SDG #6 Water & Sanitation
I will calculate my water footprint and look for a few ways I can reduce consumption or waste.
Education & Livelihood
Share Your Eco Habits
SDG #11 Communities
Through my social media channels, in person, or as an Earth Month Ecochallenge feed reflection, I will share with others an environmentally friendly habit I have cultivated.
Climate & Ecosystems
Support Local Pollinators
SDG #15 Life On Land
At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 45 minutes researching which plants support local pollinators and plant some in my area.
Economy & Communities
Online Energy Audit
SDG #7 Energy
I will complete an online energy audit of my home, office, or dorm room and identify my next steps for saving energy.
Economy & Communities
Choose Clean/Renewable Energy
SDG #7 Energy
I will sign up for my utility company's clean/renewable energy option.
Economy & Communities
Create A Readiness Plan
SDG #9 Industry & Infrastructure
I will develop a readiness plan for my household in the event of an emergency.
Health & Equity
Spend Time Outside
SDG #3 Health & Well-Being
I will replace 15 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.
Climate & Ecosystems
Save water by planting indigenous plants to your region.
Indigenous plants or native plants are those that originated in a given geographic area without human involvement or that arrived there without intentional or unintentional intervention of humans from an area in which they originally originated. Native/Indigenous plants and grasses have adapted to the soil in which they grow and usually use less water compared to non-native plants. When your entire garden is native plants, large water savings can be achieved annually.
Health & Equity
Safe Disposal of Medications and Household Chemicals
SDG #3 Health & Well-Being
I will spend 45 minutes learning about how and where to dispose of medications and chemicals properly.
Climate & Ecosystems
Calculate Your Carbon Impact
SDG #13 Climate
I will calculate the carbon emissions associated with my household and consider how lifestyle changes could reduce the carbon footprint and impacts on the environment.
Climate & Ecosystems
[WSP custom action] Embodied Carbon Action Plan
WSP has signed the Structural Engineering Institute 2050 Commitment (SE 2050) to reduce embodied carbon in structural systems. Read WSP's newly published embodied carbon action plan (ECAP).
Economy & Communities
Learn About The Economy & Communities SDGs
SDG #7, 9 & 12
I will spend 15 minutes learning about these SDGs.

REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Caitlyn Cooper 4/11/2022 12:56 PMSpending too much time indoors or in front of screens makes us forget what life is for. Technology can be both a burden and a blessing. As an environmental scientist I can understand how technology like GIS, plant ID apps, etc can make us better at protecting the environment. But it's a double-edged sword, where we can become too reliant on technology and the consumerism that comes with it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was it like to mend your clothing? If you are skilled at mending, what tips do you have for others?
Caitlyn Cooper 4/10/2022 6:34 PMMy friend's pants ripped a hole in the middle of brunch so I thought it was the perfect opportunity to fulfill my eco challenge! My best tips for mending-
Caitlyn Cooper 4/10/2022 6:56 PMMy best tips for mending are 1) Having iron-on patches (that you can cut to size) one hand and 2) picking up a multi-pack bag of different colors of embroidery floss. Embroidery floss can be separated by strand and is cheaper than trying to have a spool of every color of thread for miscellaneous clothing repairs. Iron-on patches on the inside of the clothing can't be seen, but re-enforces the repaired area.

REFLECTION QUESTIONEducation & LivelihoodHow do you create new sustainability-related habits or change bad habits?
Caitlyn Cooper 4/06/2022 11:45 AMOne of my favorite enviro-friendly habits is replacing paper towels with "unpaper towels" for everyday messes such as cleaning counters or spilled juice.
I still use disposable paper towels for pet or bathroom-related cleanups but have replaced my disposables with forest-friendly paper towels from Who Gives A Crap brand. I used to go through dozens of rolls of paper towels, and now I use about 2-3 rolls a year!
I made my own unpaper towels but check out Marley's Monsters for ready-made ones and more info on how well they work to cut down on waste. After 2 years of use, they aren't as vibrant looking, but still work wonders on cleaning up spills. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?
Caitlyn Cooper 4/06/2022 7:16 AMWill make greater effort to eat less meat as it has a great impact on water usage.
