Health & Equity

Practice Mindfulness

SDG #3 Health & Well-Being

I will spend 10 minutes each day practicing mindfulness.

Support A Renters Bills of Rights

SDG #1 No Poverty

Of nearly 44 million U.S. renter households in 2019, more than 45% paid rent equal to 30% or more of their gross household income. I will spend 15 minutes learning about a renters bill of rights and affordable housing.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Health & Equity

Spend Time Outside

SDG #3 Health & Well-Being

I will replace 10 minute(s) per day typically spent inside (computer time, watching television, etc.) with quality time outside exercising, enjoying the sunrise/sunset, gardening, journaling, or practicing gratitude for nature.

COMPLETED 13

Climate & Ecosystems

Reduce Single-Use Plastics

SDG #14 & 15

Throughout the day, I will note the single-use plastics I use and consider the reusable options available to me.

COMPLETED 14
DAILY ACTIONS

Climate & Ecosystems

Ecological & Xeriscape Gardening

SDG #14 & 15

I will do one or more of the following actions in my yard, or volunteer in my community: plant indigenous plants, landscape with water-efficient plants, add mulching, replace a lawn, and/or use eco-friendly fertilizers.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Climate & Ecosystems

Support Local Pollinators

SDG #15 Life On Land

At least 30% of crops and 90% of flowering plants rely on pollinators to produce fruit. I will spend 20 minutes researching which plants support local pollinators and plant some in my area.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Education & Livelihood

Take Action During Earth Week

I will participate in Earth Week by attending at least one of the global Emerson Earth Day Live Panel discussions during Earth Week on 19th and 20th April, listening to the special Planet in Focus podcast episode, or completing an EcoChallenge action.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate & Ecosystems
What ecological or xeriscape landscaping practices do you have? How has your landscape changed from these practices?

I won't be able to do this until May, but I'm going to order a pollinator kit of plants from my local watershed district.  I am adding this to our landscape close to my bees.  I'm hoping this will provide more local food for them this year.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate & Ecosystems
What is one way you will reduce your carbon foorprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?

I already use energy efficient appliances.  I plant trees.  I try to ensure my landscape can support itself without excessive maintenance.

We are currently exploring installing solar panels at the farm.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate & Ecosystems
Why is it important to take care of pollinators? Do you have a favorite pollinator?

I believe it's critical to care for our pollinators.  It has a direct impact on our food supply and the quality of what we provide.  We have done so much damage in trying to have nice lawns and clean landscapes that we forget the impact to the rest of our environment.  I work on restoring native landscape at our farm to support my pollinators who in turn help with my garden and fruit trees.

I joined this challenge so I could understand additional actions that I could take to be more green.  I also wanted to learn more about what is being done around the world to support efforts.

What did you think of the training? What new concepts did you learn?

I thought this was a good high level overview.  Material was a little dry but good information.  I did appreciate that they pointed out that "low carbon" is not truly defined.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Basic Needs & Security
What was something important you learned about renter rights and affordable housing?

I really liked the idea of community land trusts.  It seems like we must be developing a lot of older and somewhat abandoned housing areas in our country and this seems like a better solution.  As a community we should support those who are looking to gain that comfort and stability with a home in an area they can afford.

I also appreciated the notes from the landlord perspective.  We own a property that we rent and if we only focus on the renter rights we overlook the impact to those that are small property owners who need rent paid to support owning the property.  There needs to be a balance.

Overall I wish we had more innovative ideas for solving the problem.

What is one way you will reduce your water use? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your water use?

One way I can reduce the water I use is by reducing my shower time and reducing the amount of time I let the kitchen sink run.

Based on the eval I'm already low usage, but I know I can improve.

Long term I would be interested in checking out gray water systems.

What are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?

When I've been inside for too long and take the time to go out and enjoy nature I feel so energized.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What was it like to practice mindfulness? If this is a practice for you already, what was something new you understood in practicing during Earth Month?

I've been using the app Insight Timer.  This has been especially helpful in quieting my mind to be able to achieve better sleep.
