Taking care of existing clothing may not required you to do all the mending yourself. I like supporting my local dry cleaners tailor. Its a local small minority own shop and they need the business.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Education & Livelihood
How does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?

    Nadine Chin-Santos's avatar
    Nadine Chin-Santos 4/25/2022 9:27 AM
When trying to get others to practice socially sustainable actions its causing stress. Can you listen to a mindful podcast on the train this week to re-center and concentrate on wellness rather than stress about the climate?
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Economy & Communities
What was it like to mend your clothing? If you are skilled at mending, what tips do you have for others?

Mending clothing is great but if the clothing is un-mendable how can I donate use clothing to make its way to a recycling source?

Great question…I’ve been looking for something similar. Let me know if you find any good options! I haven’t had much luck so I usually just turn old ripped up clothes and scraps into dog toys.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Basic Needs & Security
What was a linking factor across this group of SDGs?

    Nadine Chin-Santos's avatar
    Nadine Chin-Santos 4/21/2022 6:44 AM
Should basic needs and security include having a living parent to care for their child (internationally and locally) ?

More than 1 in every 200 children in New York City have lost a parent or caregiver to COVID — nearly double the rate seen across the country.

Among the city’s Black, Hispanic and Asian kids, the statistics are far worse. They are about three times more likely to have lost a parent or caregiver compared to white children here.

Mental health workers are struggling to keep up with demand from grieving youth.

Bridges to Prosperity is an amazing way to see first hand how WSP and you can contribute to these SDGs.

Yesterday I had a lovely lunch with 2 colleagues. After lunch I encouraged them to join me in bringing back to the office their single use plastics and rise them off and recycle them. I said it was to participate in earth month, but I'm hoping now that they know how easy it was to help reduce plastic waste they'll decide to do it without me : )
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate & Ecosystems
Why is it important to take care of pollinators? Do you have a favorite pollinator?

    Nadine Chin-Santos's avatar
    Nadine Chin-Santos 4/19/2022 9:26 AM
Did you know yellowjackets were warriors helping our gardens by feeding on our herb and vegetable gardens? Instead of fearing them I've learned to appreciate their need for personal space : )
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Education & Livelihood
What was it like to actively listen to someone? How did both people and the conversation benefit from active listening?

    Nadine Chin-Santos's avatar
    Nadine Chin-Santos 4/19/2022 9:23 AM
Want to add to the benefit of returning to the office? Engage a new person you haven't had the opportunity to before, and make active listening a way to enhance your shared time.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate & Ecosystems
How can spending more time outdoors enhance your sense of place? Was there a new place in your region that was exciting to learn about and visit?

Would it be nice to expand your children's experience in local farming? In Queens NY we have a wonderful farm open to the public and offering events and educational events. The Queens County farm, at 79-50 Little Neck Pkwy, was where we donated my pet skunk when I was a child. they no longer have a skunk but they have a few small farm friendly animals.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate & Ecosystems
What plastic or single-use items do you regularly use? What did you substitute or could be substituted?

When eating takeout with colleagues, after eating, I bring back the container and single use utensils to rinse and make sure it gets disposed in a designated recycling bin.
