MRF visit
I attended the Sustainability Committee's tour of the Materials Recycling Facility used by our waste hauler. It was sad to see all the products generated in just a short time in our local area, but encouraging to see that smart, concerned people are working hard to find solutions to recycling issues.

REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat ecological or xeriscape landscaping practices do you have? How has your landscape changed from these practices?
Michelle Bilodeau-Lanne 4/07/2022 5:48 AMI am adding organic mulch to my own yard, have had my yard certified as a Monarch habitat, and purchase native perennial plants for my pollinator gardens. Mostly the rabbits eat these, but I keep trying! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityHow did you incorporate using an entire vegetable (skins, peels, tops, and stalks) during one of your meal preps? What's something new you're going to try that is a zero-waste meal practice?
Michelle Bilodeau-Lanne 4/06/2022 12:13 PMMy daughter and I are vegetarians working toward more vegan meals. We have been enjoying trying new recipes. I have been making broth out of leftover food cuttings and bringing leftovers in for lunch. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat are the implications for a culture that spends most of its time inside and on screens?
Michelle Bilodeau-Lanne 4/06/2022 12:11 PMI walk my dog every day and have been walking with friends now that it is light after work. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONHealth & EquityWhat was surprising about the ingredients in your cleaning supplies, personal care, and pet products?
Michelle Bilodeau-Lanne 4/06/2022 12:04 PMUnfortunately my dog's collar is very toxic, but tick preventative is a must where we live. I am going to double check with our vet to see if there are any safer alternatives. I have asked this question in the past and the answer has been "no", but I will check in again. -
Michelle Bilodeau-Lanne 4/06/2022 5:33 AMThe challenge is going really well so far! The meatless/vegan meals are the easiest part, but finding five minutes a day to meditate is surprisingly hard. I need to develop new strategies to remind myself to do this. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhat was it like to mend your clothing? If you are skilled at mending, what tips do you have for others?
Michelle Bilodeau-Lanne 4/04/2022 5:55 AMI got bleach on a favorite pair of jeans, but rather than relegate them to the donate pile, I purchased some RIT dye and dyed the damaged spot. It is not perfect, but they really do look good and I plan to continue wearing them. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONEconomy & CommunitiesWhere does the energy in your region come from? Which energy is a renewable source?
Michelle Bilodeau-Lanne 4/04/2022 5:53 AMWe purchase our electricity from a community solar group. We are moving within the year and plan to put solar panels on our next house, but in the meantime this felt like a good compromise. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBasic Needs & SecurityWhat was the tastiest meatless or vegan meal you ever had or had recently? Did you make it? Can you share a recipe?
Michelle Bilodeau-Lanne 4/04/2022 5:51 AMWe purchased a new vegan cookbook and it has really expanded what we can do with vegan cooking. The recipes are easy to make and use normal ingredients. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONClimate & EcosystemsWhat area of climate action are you most passionate about and why?
Michelle Bilodeau-Lanne 4/04/2022 5:51 AMI have signed up for the 2022 River Keeper Sweep. This is an event that involves cleaning up trash from around the Hudson River. I grew up along this river and it is a the literal life blood of our community and the ecosystems surrounding it.
