  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Climate & Ecosystems
What is one way you will reduce your carbon foorprint? What is a practice you already have that helps you reduce your carbon footprint?

A practice I already implement is using temperature sensors around the apartment to measure the space temperature and make sure our heating system does not exceed a certain space temperature. I am attempting to reduce my carbon footprint by sealing air leaks around the apartment (reducing gas usage for the heating system), reducing the temperature of showers, and reducing the time I spend in the shower.

What was it like to practice mindfulness? If this is a practice for you already, what was something new you understood in practicing during Earth Month?

This is only after my first day of implementing this daily habit, but it already helped bring a sense of peace and calm to my day. It helped break up the tunnel-vision of my work day. I've also read that this kind of practice helps promote "elastic" thinking, which is a more "out of the box" approach to problem solving (I highly recommend the book Elastic by Leonard Mlodinow).

How does practicing a work-life balance create a more sustainable life for you? How might it contribute to sustainability more broadly?

I enjoy diving deep into my work, especially in moments of high pressure. I've found that this drive can be detrimental to my work-life balance, as I tend to lose sight of the big picture...that our lives are finite and that our presence in the universe is miniscule (respectfully, I understand  that this belief may not be shared by everyone). For me, these thoughts are a reminder that our being alive is no small miracle and that it should be taken advantage of as much as possible. Carving out time to enjoy the little (and the big) things in life helps me connect with the people I love, with nature, and helps me re-focus the lens of my life to counter the tunnel-vision I sometimes get with work. With a more well-rounded appreciation for life, I feel nourished and that helps me return to work energized. This, I believe, is a much more sustainable way to live and to work.

How do you create new sustainability-related habits or change bad habits?

I watch informative documentaries or read about the negative global impact of NOT taking some specific action (such as composting). These usually present the information in a way where it's impossible to ignore. Then, once I've decided on some new habit to take up, I seek people who already engage in that activity and ask them whatever logistical questions I may have, and research whatever information I'll need to take it up myself. A bonus for motivation is to find a friend / roommate / partner who will engage in the activity with you.
